Susanville’s Hometown Proud IGA store, Susanville Supermarket celebrates 20 years in business with a host of store promotions to share with its customers.

But as owners Rick and Anna Stewart celebrate a successful 20 years, they give all the credit to their employees and their customers.

“We’re proud to be here, and we really want to thank the community for letting us build our lives here and be part of this community,” Rick said. “This building is just four block walls. What makes the difference is the people who work here and the customers who shop here. In the past 20 years we’ve really made an effort to make Susanville our home. As a result, we’ve been able to provide hundreds of jobs that provide a living wage and the opportunity for kids to go to college, the opportunity for young people to develop their work skills, and more importantly their work ethic. One of the things I’m most proud of is we were able to come in and conduct business in such a fashion that it wasn’t just about the bottom line. It never has been.”

Judge grants continuance in Stone case

Visiting Lassen County Superior Court Judge C. Anders Holmer granted a continuance in the $1 million wrongful termination case brought by Tom Stone, the former Lassen County administrative officer during a hearing in the Lassen County Hall of Justice Tuesday, April 30.

Stone told the court health issues had forced his Reno-based attorney, Treva Hearne to retire unexpectedly due to various medical issues and he had no idea what the legal process was. He said at her advice they filed a document April 4 in which Stone became his own attorney. Stone said both he and Hearne were seeking another attorney to represent him in the matter, but the effort “put the ball in my court to change horses in midstream.”

Holmer asked Stone if he had read and understood the request by Lassen County’s attorney Kathleen Williams, and he said he had, but he had to research to find out what a demurrer meant. He asked the court to grant him time to find a qualified attorney who was willing to come to Lassen County to represent him.

The 6,400 acre Panther Fire is burning out of control in Tehama County and sending smoke into Plumas and Lassen Counties.  The map also shows the 75 acre Cedar Fire burning a few miles south of Butte Meadows in Butte County.

May 3, 2013 - Smoke from the Panther Fire in Tehama County is drifting in the Almanor Basin and other areas of Plumas and Lassen Counties. The Panther Fire started Wednesday morning and by Friday morning had grown to over 6,400 acres.

CalFire and the Forest Service are battling the blaze with 81 fire engines and 14 dozers, 7 helicopters and 16 handcrews. Handcrews will be key in this effort since much of the area the fire is burning in is too steep and rugged for fire engines and even dozers. The fire is only 10 percent contained.
