Traffic diverted on Main Street

P6135747

UPDATE: June 14, 2012— Four people were transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center (BLMC) after a head-on collision on Highway 36 in the afternoon of Wednesday, June 13.

According to a press release from the Susanville Police Department (SPD), officers responded to the scene located on the highway east of Riverside Drive at approximately 3:05 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found two vehicles on the bridge over the Susan River.

According to the SPD, initial investigation showed Brandon Micone, 36, of Susanville, was traveling eastbound on the highway when he allegedly allowed his 2000 Dodge Durango to cross over the double yellow center line.

Incidentally, the Durango collided with a Dodge Avenger traveling westbound into Susanville, driven by Melinda Duerksen, 27, of Westwood.

According to the press release, both vehicles sustained major damage and Micone had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel. The SPD said he was transported to BLMC via ambulance on a complaint of possible internal injuries.

Duerksen complained of a possible left ankle fracture and was also transported to BLMC, as were her children ages 5 and 7, who sustained facial injuries, according to the SPD.

Highway 36 was closed for approximately 90 minutes while the accident was investigated and the roadway cleaned up. The California Highway Patrol, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Caltrans and Susanville Fire Department assisted the SPD at the scene.

The collision is still under investigation and the cause of the collision has not yet been determined. However, according to the press release, the police department is investigating whether prescription medications were a contributing factor in the collision.
