Susanville firefigther dies working Modoc County fire

A Susanville man died Monday, June 10 as a result of injuries sustained on a wildfire on the Modoc National Forest, according to a press release from the United States Forest Service.

Luke Sheehy, 28, a member of the California Smokejumpers, based out of Redding, was struck by a falling portion of a tree on the Saddle Back Fire in the South Warner Wilderness about 15 miles southeast of Alturas, Calif.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. according to the press release.

 

Supes approve minutes over Spencer’s objections

June 11, 2013 — Westwood resident Eileen Spencer, representing KanWeHelp, continued her assault against the Lassen County Board of Supervisors’ practice of not posting minutes of their meetings on the county clerk’s website before they come up for approval.

And then she added new criticism of Julie Bustamante, Lassen County Clerk for her role and responsibility as the board’s clerk.

Spencer asked the board to pull approval of the minutes of its May 14 and May 21 meetings from the board’s consent calendar for separate discussion. Board chair Jack Hanson granted her request.

  

Supervisors oppose proposed funding change

June 11, 2013 — Fighting for the chance to stop a shift of Public Health funds, Lassen County Supervisors unanimously voted to oppose the governor’s proposal to redirect County Realignment funds to the state.

In a recent proposal by California Governor Jerry Brown, funds originally designated toward public health programs may decrease by $2.8 million, potentially lowering the current Public and Environmental Health and Public Health realignment funding from $1,842,850 to negative $927,629.

  

Stone’s attorney asks to file amended lawsuit

June 11, 2013 — Tom Stone, the former Lassen County administrative officer who filed a pair of $1 million wrongful termination suits against Lassen County and the three supervisors who voted to fire him, has a new attorney who has asked the court for permission to file a new amended complaint.

A court hearing on the matter is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 17 in the Lassen County Hall of Justice.

Some of Stone’s more incendiary allegations of violations of his First Amendment rights — that the county discriminated against him because of his Mormon religion and that the free speech rights of he and his wife were violated because he refused to curtail his wife’s involvement with Tea Party politics — are gone.

  

Information sought on missing local Caltrans worker

Monday, patrick mccarthyJune 10, 2013 — Local residents who have any information regarding the whereabouts of Patrick McCarthy, 45, of Doyle, are asked to call the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.

McCarthy’s family has filed a missing person’s report with the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office. He is described as a Caucasian male, 6’2” tall, weighing 215 pounds. He has brown, short hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen driving a maroon 2004 extended cab Ford Ranger with California license plate number 82362B1.

McCarthy is a Caltrans equipment operator II and works out of the Susanville facility. He called in sick to work June 3, and one of his neighbors saw his truck that afternoon in Doyle. He has not been seen or heard from since.
