School is almost over and I’m counting down the days to summer

April 17, 2012 — As I write this, the wind is howling and I’m longing for the days of summer. I don’t like to complain about the weather, especially when it means much-needed rain and snow for our area, but I enjoy the summer months in Lassen County — it means warm days, the smell of fresh-cut grass, barbecues, camping, fair week, baseball games, and, not-so-local the added bonus of the Summer Olympics in London in July.

But that will all have to wait.

I suppose we should let spring run its course here, especially since summer doesn’t technically start until June 21.

And, we in the newsroom enter what I think is one of the busiest times of the year.

Recently, students participated in the annual Science Fair and Lit Jam and since some of the schools are part of my beat, I associate those events with,“the end of the school year is fast approaching and didn’t they just start school?”

As a community newspaper, we try to make sure all the schools get appropriate graduation coverage, including Lassen, Westwood and Herlong high schools, the charter schools, alternative education, then Lassen Community College and eighth-grade graduations.

Plus, there are the end of the school year events including senior awards night at Lassen High School where students are awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships from local businesses and agencies.

It’s a busymonth, but they are the moments where the excitement and sense of accomplishment can be felt.

This June we also have elections and the newsroom staff is working on getting candidate statements from those running for the Lassen County Superior Court Judge and District 1, 2 and 4 supervisor seats.

Look for those in an upcoming edition of the Times, as well as post-election coverage.

Following that, we will start looking to put fair stories together. Whew, after all that I will be ready for those wonderful days and activities of summer.

And please remember this is the time of year when students are receiving prestigious scholarships and awards, as well as teachers being recognized for their efforts. Readers will start seeing some of those featured in the newspaper.

We don’t want to leave anyone out so give us a call or an email to let us know.
