Balancing the national ballot process

Jan. 17, 2012 — It’s amazing what you can learn if you just stop what you’re doing and listen to what is being said. I found this to be the case Jan. 5 as the network pundits continued to rehash the Iowa caucus results.

In the midst of their circling dialogue a new fact emerged from guest Karl Rove, the former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to former President George W. Bush.

 

Hey, you need to wake up, Old Man Winter!

Jan. 17, 2012 — I know, I know. I probably should be thanking my lucky mid-winter night’s dreams I haven’t had to scrape that funky patch of hard, crusty ice that always seems to form under several inches of snow off my windshield yet this winter.

While the temperature frequently drops a little below freezing for the morning rush hour many recent mornings, there just hasn’t been much precipitation this winter. That’s disturbing.

 

Another public defender idea for the county

Jan. 10, 2012 — For the past several months, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors has heard, talked about and received conflicting information regarding the amount the county could save by contracting the services of the Lassen County Public Defender’s office.

According to local attorney Mark Nareau, the county could save about $750,000 over three years if it contracted the public defender’s services to his newly formed consortium of five attorneys.

 

Make a resolution to volunteer in 2012

Jan. 10, 2012 — Ask around any community, and you will hear many people voice a need for volunteers.

I have been creating a list of organizations in Westwood that need help in order to write a series of articles on volunteerism, and the opportunities for volunteering are great.
