Wayward bear wanders through Susanville
Lt. Carol Growdon, with the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) law enforcement division, characterized the animal as “a no harm, no foul bear that was in the wrong place. The bear did not cause any reported incidents but definitely was “not in its normal environment.”
Growdon said the first call about the wandering bear came in about 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning when it was spotted near First Street in Susanville.
Growdon said she received another call about the bear about 9:45 p.m. that evening when it was sighted near the intersection of Alexander and Main streets.
Personnel from the DFG Wildlife Management team responded — with assistance from the United States Deparment of Agriculture Wildlife Service and the Susanville Police Department — tranquilized the bear and returned it to the woods, Growdon said.
They waited until the bear recovered and was acting normally before they left the area.
Growdon said the distance DFG transported the bear was not far enough to be classified as a relocation, but they returned it to its natural environment.
She said it’s somewhat rare for a bear to wander into an urban area, but such an event is not totally out of the ordinary.
She said most bear encounters with civilization occur in outlying areas where human habitation and the bear’s natural environment collide.
