CHP gives details about Bass Hill accident
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of the Cherokee, Michael Johnson, was also arrested on suspicion of allegedly driving under the influence.
Emergency personnel including Mountain Life Flightresponded to the scene of the accident that occurred at approximately 10:19 a.m.
According to a press release from the CHP, Johnson was traveling northbound on 395 with his passenger Angela Sullyharbord and for unknown reasons he turned into a wide dirt turnout on the east side of the highway and he accelerated rapidly, losing control of the vehicle as it began to fishtail on the dirt shoulder.
The vehicle then entered the northbound lane, almost perpendicular to the roadway and directly into the path of Chris Turren, of Portola, who was driving a 3/4 ton 2002 Dodge Ram pickup.
According to the CHP, Turren turned to the left but was unable to avoid the errant Jeep.
Upon impact, Johnson and Sullyharbord, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected andlanded in the roadway while their vehicle continued to its point of rest on its wheels in the southbound number two lane.
The Dodge pickup also came to rest on its wheels in the same lane.
Johnson was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno via Mountain Life Flight. Sullyharbord was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center (BLMC)via ambulance and was then transported to Renown by CareFlight.
According to the CHP, Turren, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to BLMC where he was treated and released.
The case remains under investigation.
