Passenger dies in semi accident on Highway 44

May 16, 2012 — According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, James Parsons, 41, of Lenoir, N.C., was driving a semi-truck with a trailer, traveling eastbound on Highway 44, west of Highway 36.

At approximately 4 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 16, for reasons yet to be determined, Parsons allowed his vehicle to drift off of the roadway and down the embankment where it collided with several trees.

The vehicle overturned, partially ejecting the passenger who was in the sleeper berth of the truck.

The 43-year-old passenger, a man who has yet to be identified, of Morganton, N.C., sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Parsons reported no injuries.

Drove by it later that morning. One of those accidents that make you wonder how someone could walk away from it. Couldn't make out what was left of the truck.

And I doubt he swerved to miss a deer. First of all, what kind of semi driver with any common sense would do that? Just smack the deer! There wasn't one skid mark that I could see either. I think he probably just fell a sleep.

I saw the rig and the scene a few hours afterwards- he did not swerve no skid marks on the road, he probably fell asleep.

If trucks were allowed to go the same speed as regular vehicles instead of 55 then there would not be as many going to sleep.

That was my friends dad that died....regardless of what caused the accident, someone in the wreck, didn't "just walk away". Let's not forget him, this is tragic and hurting many people back here in North Carolina. There isn't one comment on here saying anything about his death. Shame on you....

My son works for this company and is regretfully sorry for the loss of this driver. He says reguardless if the driver fell asleep or not, the company just lost a good driver who had just gotten 'Driver of the Year Award". Will miss you Woody.
