Lady Grizzlies earn multiple victories over Anderson

May 3 — The Lassen High School Lady Grizzlies traveled to Anderson High School to take on the two-time defending section champions, the Anderson Lady Cubs, in a doubleheader Tuesday, April 30. The Lady Grizzlies came out on top of both games, winning 7-4 and 10-5.
The Lady Grizzlies then hosted Anderson in the third game of the series Thursday, May 2. The Lady Grizzlies again enjoyed a victory over the Lady Cubs, winning the game 14-7.
Shelby Campa was the winning pitcher in the first game on Tuesday. She pitched all seven innings for Lassen, getting five strikeouts, one walk and allowing eight hits and three earned runs.
Senior Laken Cagle dominated offensively for the Lady Grizzlies, hitting a double that brought in two runs in the seventh inning, giving Lassen the lead over the Lady Cubs. Abbi Scheff hit a triple and had two RBIs. Lindsay Northrop hit an RBI.
Kennedy Ford led Lassen’s offense in Tuesday’s second game, going 2-3 at bat, hitting two homeruns and getting two RBIs. Taylor Knect also had a great run at the plate, hitting a homerun and getting three RBIs. Kelsey Pinneo and Jessica Richards each hit an RBI for the Lady Grizzlies.
Pinneo pitched 6.1 innings for Lassen, getting four strikeouts and allowing 12 hits and five earned runs. Lauren Cagle pitched two innings, allowing one hit.
In the third game of the series, played Thursday at Lassen Community College, Lauren Cagle pitched five innings for the Lady Grizzlies. She struck out three batters, walked one and allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. Campa came in to pitch two innings, getting one strike out and giving up two hits.
Ford hit a triple for Lassen and got an RBI. Scheff went 1-2 at bat and had two RBIs. Northrop went 3-4 and also got two RBIs. Knecht had two RBIs. Danica Guillen was 3-4 at the plate and scored two runs.
“(We) played great defense, pitched well and got timely hitting,” said coach Paul Moore, “Beating them was sweet revenge, as they beat us 2-0 last year in semi-finals and playoffs.”
After the games against Anderson, Lassen was 8-1 in league play. The Lady Grizzlies will face Yreka High School in a three-game series played Tuesday, May 7 at Lassen Community College and Thursday, May 9 in Yreka. The Lady Grizzlies only need to win two out of the three games to win the Northern Athletic League championship.
Grizzlies win big against Corning Cardinals

May 2 — The Lassen High School baseball team continues to enjoy the sweet taste of victory and there is no sign of their winning streak coming to an end anytime soon. The Grizzlies played the Corning High School Cardinals Friday, April 19 at Memorial Park. The Grizzlies won the game, 9-1. Senior Joey Beck pitched an incredible one-hit game, striking out 13 batters.
After the game against Corning, Lassen was ranked number one in the league and boasted a league record of 8-1. Beck is the number one ranked pitcher in the section for strikeouts.
In addition to pitching all seven innings of the game against Corning and allowing only one hit, Beck also came through for the Grizzlies offensively. He went 2-4 at the plate and hit two doubles and an RBI. Senior Colby Chavez also went 2-4 at bat, hitting a double and getting three RBIs. After the game against Corning, Chavez had a batting average of .472, the second highest in the Northern Section. Sophomore Daniel Perry was right behind him, with a batting average of .457, making him third highest in the section. In the game against Corning, Perry went 1-2 and hit an RBI. Ryan Sharpe also hit an RBI for Lassen.
The Grizzlies went on to play the Quincy Trojans in a non-league game Wednesday, April 24 and won, 9-2.

Grizzliette show
The annual Grizzliette show will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3 in the gym at Lassen High School. The doors will open at 6 p.m. for ticket sales.
The show features the Grizzliettes’ routines from the year, new dances and performances from the Lassen County Fair.
The Lassen High School cheer squad, House of Dance, the DV drill team and J and J Performing Arts will also perform at the show.
There will be minimal entry fees, which will all go toward paying for uniforms.

Hunter education class for women only
Pheasants Forever, Hunting Buddies Hunting Company and Sierra Sportsmen Club are sponsoring a women-only hunter education class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 18 and Saturday, May 25. The class will be held at the Bureau of Land Management office on Fifth Street in Susanville.
This is a 16-hour class; you must attend both days to obtain a hunter safety certificate.

Sports physicals
Northeastern Rural Health Clinic and Westwood Family Practice are giving sports physicals for student athletes throughout June, July, August and September.
There is a minimal fee that will be payable at the time of the visit. No insurance will be billed.
A parent must be present to sign consent forms.
Student athletes are asked to wear shorts on the day of the exam.

Birdies “Fore” Basketball golf tournament
The Lassen Boys’ Basketball Boosters are hosting a golf tournament to support Lassen High School boys’ basketball. The tournament will be at Diamond Mountain Golf Course at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1.
To obtain a registration form, visit the T&A Lounge, the Lassen High School office or the Lassen County Times. A separate registration form must be completed for each golfer.

4-H/FFA Horse Show and Educational Expo
The 4-H/FFA Horse Show and Educational Expo will be Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2 at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. The show will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Gymkhana events begin at 5 p.m. Saturday. The educational contest will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Children in 4-H and FFA in California and Nevada are welcome to attend.
The show is a qualifier for the California State Fair and California 4-H Horse Classic.
