Saturday containment anticipated for Spanish Fire

Thursday, July 19, 2012 — The Spanish Fire, that has blackened about 50 acres near Spanish Springs, located approximately 50 miles north of Susanville, should be contained by Saturday, July 21, according to a Susanville Interagency Fire Center (SIFC) spokesperson.

Jeff Fontana said the fire had consumed about 50 acres as of 5:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19 and was about 50 percent contained.

Fire crews have to clear about 1 ½ miles of line to contain the fire, which began about 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 18 burning through grass, sagebrush and scattered juniper.

About 170 SIFC personnel are battling the blaze to work and improve the fire line.

Fontana said no structures have been lost, but three outbuildings and two residences were threatened.

That area is no longer called Spanish Springs, a cult bought the ranch a while back and renamed it "Thunder Mountain." Keep an eye out for Tom Cruise and the other scientologists up there!
