A group of inmates, working for state construction agencies, was this week making “a substantial start in clearing right-of-way grading” on a road joining Susanville with Red Bluff. Such improvements on the old road were the steppingstones to the birth of Highway 36.

After beating Nevada teams by the scores of 10-5, 7-6 and 3-1, the Susanville City Merchants came back home winners of the Nevada State Softball Championship. The Nevada trophy donator had been so confident about a Nevada win that he had already engraved “of Nevada” on the trophy following the winning team’s name. The City Merchants had been rated in Nevada as “just another team.”

A new telephone central office opened in Janesville to the buzz of most county people. The new hub, built at a cost of $50,000, allowed subscribers in Standish, Litchfield, Janesville and other outlying areas to dial directly into Susanville. Until then, those customers had to dial long-distance to reach people as close as a couple miles away.

The Supervisors have agreed to create an ordinance banning new septage ponds at the Stones-Bengard area of Eagle Lake. According to Stones-Bengard Community Services District Chairman Bill Sievers, some residents are trying to set up their own septage ponds in lieu of hooking up sewers.

The Supervisors have expressed a strong interest in having the Stones-Bengard area and Spalding residents hook up to sewers, so that Eagle Lake does not become polluted.

Quick thinking and training came in handy last week when a 16-year-old youth was arrested for armed robbery after taking approximately $1,000 from the Lassen County Federal Credit Union on Riverside Drive. Credit Union Chief Executive Officer Delight Callegari, said the teller, “Did everything right,” which included staying calm and fulfilling the alleged robber’s wishes.

Miles from New Orleans, Sierra Army Depot personnel spent Thursday, Sept. 1, loading supplies onto trucks to be sent to Hurricane Katrina survivors. Putting other shipments on hold, SIAD employees mobilized 50 containers to be carried by commercial trucks to Fort Worth, Texas for further distribution to the hurricane-stricken Gulf Coast.

Last year

Chrissy Satterfield, a familiar face to many in Lassen County, may soon be recognized throughout the United States. The 2003 Westwood High graduate and former Miss Lassen County, has her photo posted with a weekly, political column titled “Dose of Honesty” she writes for WorldNetDaily.com, an Internet news site. As a result of her willingness to share her political point of view, Satterfield appeared on Fox and Friends this August.

She was interviewed by Gretchen Carlson on the Political Round Table. Although she considers herself a conservative, she was asked to take the moderate point of view. Two other guests offered liberal and conservative viewpoints during the discussion.

“They gave me the topic about 18 hours ahead of time, so while I was on the plane I tried to think about what I was going to say and at least get some talking points out there. I had all these things I wanted to say, and then it was such a short amount of time I only got to say one thing,” said Satterfield.
