Memorial planned for Bruce and Kathy Rhymes

May 21, 2013 — Susanville Airport Manager Steve Datema confirmed a memorial will be held Thursday, May 23 for Bruce and Kathy Rhymes. The husband and wife were killed when their small airplane crashed near the Auburn Airport May 18. Datema said the family planned a memorial that will take place at 5 p.m. in the EAA Hangar at the airport with a potluck to follow at 6 p.m. Those who attend are reminded to dress warmly. If you wish to bring pictures to share, they will be displayed during the memorial.

 

Operation Safe Boat event, May 25

May 21, 2013 — The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety and Enforcement Unit, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), PG&E and the US Forest Service will be conducting a joint agency Water Safety day, to coincide with National Safe Boating Week. It will be held Saturday, May 25 at Lake Almanor.

Voluntary boating safety equipment inspections conducted by US Coast Guard Auxiliary and Plumas County Sheriff’s Boat Patrol personnel to ensure boaters have all of the required US Coast Guard safety equipment will be the primary focus of this safety day.

  

Lassen Volcanic National Park scenic drive open for holiday weekend

May 21, 2013— Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz announced the main road through Lassen Volcanic National Park is scheduled to open at noon Friday, May 24 in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

“The unusually warm spring weather has really helped in snow plowing operations and will give greater access for visitors this coming holiday weekend,” said Koontz.

SpencerWestwood resident Eileen Spencer, a representative of a community bulletin board website, filed a complaint Tuesday, May 14 alleging the Lassen County Board of Supervisors violated the Brown Act, California’s Open Meeting Law, because the board said it was going to discuss the Dyer Mountain litigation in closed session, but her group believed the board actually was going to discuss the delinquent taxes owed by the proposed four-season resort’s developer. “This board must stop abusing the Brown Act with these types of deceptions,” Spencer said. “This is the public’s business.” County officials told Spencer despite her allegation, the board would be discussing the item it agendized during the closed session. The board had originally planned to discuss the item at its April 23 meeting, but that discussion was abandoned when the board discovered the agenda listed the wrong court case. Photo by Sam Williams

May 21, 2013 — The Kan We Help Executive Committee, a group that hosts a website, filed a Brown Act (California’s Open Meeting Law) violation with the Lassen County Board of Supervisors during public comment before a closed session held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.
