A businessman from Quincy visited Susanville officials to inquire about the possibility of construction of an electric light plant outside of town.

The facility would bring power to all residents and the proposed rates were: $10 a month for light everyday until 10 p.m., and $12 a month for light everyday until 12 a.m.

County merchants and residents joined a nationwide search for scrap rubber to alleviate the country’s shortage.

Westwood and Susanville collected nearly 45 tons of rubber and were expected to increase the surplus to 70 tons by the end of next summer.

City officials and course employees held an open house at the newly built Emerson Lake Golf Course.

The ceremony was designed to introduce the public to its facilities.

The nine-hole course, operated and constructed by the city was officially opened for play on July 1.

The Lassen County Board of Education decided to call a special meeting with representatives from Lassen College to hear evidence on why the college needed a $325,000 loan from the board to cover the June payroll. After it refused the college’s request, the board was forced to give the loan by court order. College President Warren Sorensen claimed the loan was needed because a state apportionment was en route to the college and was tied up at the federal level.

An intensive search last week led to the safe recovery of a missing 4-year-old Susanville girl.

Melissa “Missy” Day and her puppy wandered away from her parents, Rebecca Day and Carl Gisel, while the two were chopping wood south of the Westwood Junction, between the Bizz Johnson Trail and McCoy Flat Reservoir.

Missy was found shortly after 2:30 a.m., on June 12 about 33-½ hours after she had been reported missing.

Except for scratches on her legs from the marsh grass, she was in remarkably good condition.

The Antelope fire threatened one structure between Hwy. 139 and Willow Creek after it broke out at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, June 9 on Rice Canyon Road.

The fire, which took two days to contain, grew to 290 acres with a total of 640 firefighters responding.

Two Westwood men, who set a wooden cross on fire in front of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on March 23, were sentenced to federal prison terms last week.

On Monday, June 4, Nicholas Edward Craig, 18, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and three years supervised release.

On Friday, June 8, Kevin William Ridenour, 21, was sentenced to two years in prison and three years supervised release.

The church’s priest, Rev. Beranardin Mugabowakigeri, is a black priest from Rwanda.

Matthew Cate, secretary of the California Department of Corrections, said the legislature must act quickly to fund Assembly Bill 109 — the realignment bill that would shift responsibility for low-level offenders and parole supervision from the state to the counties — because CDCR needs to begin implementing those changes this summer if it’s to meet prisoner reduction deadlines set by the United States Supreme Court.

“Our current reduction plan does not include the early release of inmates,” Cate said during a televised Internet press conference Monday, June 6. “But it is absolutely critical the legislature understand the seriousness of the supreme court’s decision and support a variety of measures that will allow us to lower our inmate population in the safest possible way. AB 109 is the cornerstone of the solution, and the legislature must act to protect public safety by funding realignment.”
