One of three robbers involved in a bank heist outside of Redding was found on the side of a road near Westwood with a bullet wound to his shoulder. It appeared he had been left there to die by the other two.

Supervisor Hughes de Martimprey aggressively questioned the appropriateness of transferring funds from the county’s reserve accounts to various county departments. He said his information was on current balances of county accounts and was more accurate than that taken from the treasurer’s office.

Performing the cake-cutting honors for the Sierra Army Depot’s 50th anniversary celebration on May 16 was Col. Kent Fontaine, commanding officer, and Westwood citizen Arthur Bates, 84, one of the original construction workers called upon to build the Depot when it opened in 1942.

The Diamond View School band played, speeches were made, cakes were sliced and the ceremonial ribbon was cut during the grand opening celebration of the Susanville District Library on May 17. Among the local dignitaries on hand were Jim Kirks, of Northstate Library System, Marshall Leve, president of the Susanville Library District, architects Paul Hendricks and Jane Taylor, Susanville Mayor Doug Sayers and District Librarian Linda Pack.

The Arizona Pipeline Company broke ground last week on Susanville’s natural gas distribution system.
Also this week, longtime Plumas and Lassen county newspaper publisher Everett E. Bey, 83, died Thursday, May 17 at his home in Sun City, Ariz. after a lengthy illness. He was the publisher of Feather Publishing Co. from 1968 until his retirement in 1982.

A Caltrans shoulder-widening project on Highway 395 from Herlong to Sunnyside Road was discovered to go through an area with a significant number of Maidu artifacts.
Maidu Tribal Chair Ron Morales said, “What Caltrans is doing is completely and entirely wrong. They know it. The damage has already been done between Herlong and Milford. We can’t change that. But we can do the right thing from here on out as the project moves from Milford to Sunnyside Road. That’s all I want. I want Caltrans to do the right thing.”

Longtime Herlong resident, Barbara Fitch resigned from the Herlong Public Utility District Board of Directors after only serving a few months.
Fitch said, “There are too many things happening in the district that if I stayed makes me question my integrity, and I don’t think I have the energy to fight for the changes necessary to manage the public utility that belongs to the citizens, not the board members and the employees.”
