Cabela's safe boating and armed forces appreciation weekend, May 19-20

May 17, 2012 — Cabela’s Safe Boating and Armed Forces Appreciation Weekend will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19-20 at the Reno Cabela’s store, located at I-80, Exit 4.

There will be free vessel safety checks, boating safety overview seminars, how to get properly fitted for a life jacket plus interactive displays from conservation partners and marine vendors as well as a joint forces color guard and various interactive military displays.

The National Safe Boating Council, the Nevada Department of Wildlife Marine Enforcement Division and the Coast Guard will conduct a Ready, Set, Inflate demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in front of the store near the flag poles as part of National Safe Boating Week.

In honor of Armed Forces Appreciation Day, various military branches will be represented with interactive displays from the Nevada Air National Guard, the Nevada National Guard, the Vet Center’s 30-foot motor home and Friends of the National Rifle Association will be in attendance both days plus a joint forces color guard and national anthem singer will open the festivities at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Other highlights include properly fitting life jackets at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., boater safety overview at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., all about downriggers and depth finders at noon and Cabela’s free weekly beginning fly fishing and fly casting class in The Fly Shop at 10 a.m.

Note pre-registration is required for this comprehensive, two-hour fly fishing class taught by Federation of Fly Fishers-trained Cabela’s outfitters since space is limited. Just call Cabela’s Fly Shop at (775) 829-4100, ext. 8301.

All the boating seminars are free and held in the marine department.
