Clerk asks canvass board to hand count ballots in tight supervisor’s race

June 7, 2012 — As a courtesy to both candidates running in the Lassen County District 1 race — incumbent Bob Pyle and challenger Jean Hodge — Lassen County Clerk Julie Bustamante said she has asked the canvass board to hand count the ballots in that tight race.

On Thursday morning Bustamante said only 13 provisional ballots remained uncounted in that district.

According to the unofficial final results posted on the county clerk’s website, excluding those 13 provisional ballots, Pyle garnered 832 votes (50.92 percent) and Hodge garnered 797 votes (48.78 percent).

According to those results, Pyle leads Hodge by only 35 votes.

“The canvass process for the June 5, 2012 Primary Election began this morning at 9: 30 a.m.,” Bustamante wrote in a Thursday morning press release. “The canvass consists of four individuals who will verify that all ballots are accounted for and properly processed throughout Lassen County. By law they are also required to hand count 1 percent of the votes for every race on the ballot.Because the race for Supervisor District 1 is so close, I am going to have the canvass board hand count the entire district.”

Bustamante said she expects the canvass of the election will be completed by Friday, June 7.

I know I have criticized our county clerk in the past. It was very professional, and very nice of her to have the votes hand counted. Good Job.
