June 18, 2013  — Community members had the opportunity to better understand the operations of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office during an open house on Wednesday, May 29.

People toured the sheriff’s office, the county jail, dispatch and learned more about boat patrol and coroner duties. Lassen County Sheriff Dean Growdon provided an update on operations and answered questions presented by the public.

He said, “The way I look at it, the sheriff’s office belongs to everyone who lives in the county. I’m just the one who got chosen to manage it right now, and I figure it’s right to open it up and let the people see what we’re doing and give us a chance to receive input from the community, and let them know about some of the projects we’re working on.”

June 18, 2013  — Will Lassen County District 5 Supervisor Jack Hanson serve out the remainder of his term (which ends Jan.5, 2015) or will a new candidate be elected in the recall election?

The fate of the district 5 supervisor’s seat is now in the hands of the district’s voters.

Lassen County Clerk Julie Bustamante said she has tentatively scheduled the recall election for Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Bustamante said approximately 2,500 voters will answer two questions — first should Hanson be recalled (yes or no), and second (if the majority of voters seek his recall), which candidate shall serve the remainder of his term. If a majority of voters seek Hanson’s recall, the candidate who collects the most votes will be elected, regardless of how many seek the office.

A Johnstonville resident received a call from neighbors Monday afternoon about a fire at her home. Around noon, a shop, three sheds and a tack room caught fire, destroying a camper and various other items. The cause of the fire is under investigation. “It could have been a lot worse, that’s how I look at it,” said homeowner Chris Brown. “At least my house is OK.” Photo submitted

Update 4 p.m.:

Monday, June 17 — All who cared about Luke Sheehy — a Lassen County firefighter and smokejumper who died June 10 from injuries he suffered while fighting a wildfire on the Modoc National Forest — are invited to honor his life at two memorial services this weekend.

Doug Sheehy, Luke’s father, said the family invites everyone who loved and cared about Luke to attend a Day of Honor at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22 at Walker Mansion in Westwood. Food and refreshments will be provided.

The wildland firefighting community also presents a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 23 at the Redding Civic Center.

Doug Sheehy said a Luke Sheehy donation account has been opened at U.S. Bank in Susanville for those who would like to make a donation in his son’s memory.
