F. P. Cady, one of Lassen County’s Republican delegates, was picked to introduce Jacob H. Neff at the Republican convention in Stockton. Cady was chosen after his unselfish devotion to the Republican Party was recognized on a national scale.

Price administrator Leon Henderson proclaimed Lassen County as a “Defense Rental Area” in preparation of the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong.

The move was designed to ensure fair rents to military employees and give them quick access to housing.

The county was one of 250 areas across the country chosen by the U.S. government in the expansion of the nation’s armed services.

A fire completely destroyed the grandstand at Lassen High School’s Arnold Field. The fire department and 75 volunteers rushed to the scene. The value of the lost grandstand, built in the 1920s, was estimated at $12,000. Two juvenile boys, who were seen playing under the grandstand, were questioned in connection with the blaze.

Lassen Memorial Hospital met the criteria for the correction of the 51 deficiencies found by the California Department of Licensing and Certification. The licensing board released a report stating the hospital lacked a proper emergency room, proper infection control and adequate care for newborn babies.

Local dignitaries, citizens and officials from the Bureau of Land Management gathered inside the longer of two railroad tunnels on the Bizz Johnson Trail to formally dedicate the tunnel’s reopening.

Following remarks about the rail and its significance, local runners Phil Nemir and Jim Blevins cut the ribbon. The men ran the 6-½ miles from the Devil’s Corral Trailhead to Susanville specifically for the dedication.

Kindergarten students from Meadow View and McKinley schools, along with fifth-grade helpers, planted 200 aspen and cottonwood seedlings in the Susanville Ranch Park.

The tree planting was part of the schools’ Adopt-a-Watershed program.

A CHP helicopter located Lake Forest resident, Jerald Dukne, 61, and his severely disabled son, Jarmin, 25, after they got stuck on a Roop Mountain snow bank overnight.

The two enjoyed taking drives on back roads on a regular basis.

Both were examined by medical personnel and returned home.

Mayor pro tem Rocky Joy and City Administrator Luann Rainey were both honored with brief presentations at the beginning of the Wednesday, May 16 special meeting of the Susanville City Council.

The May 16 meeting was the last meeting for Joy as Mayor pro tem, as well as Rainey’s last as city administrator.

Banner Lassen Medical Center held an emergency disaster drill Wednesday, May 18.

People were cautioned to expect some unusual traffic patterns during the disaster drills but ambulances, bus routes and hospital deliveries remained unaffected.

The disaster drill was held with the cooperation of agencies throughout the local community.
