The Lassen Advocate reported many prominent members of the community decided to make a plea to railroad officials in San Francisco to have a proposed railroad between Salt Lake City and San Francisco travel through Deer Creek Pass. The route would attract new industries, settlers and much needed dollars.

A Bressi, Bevanda and Teichert Construction Company warehouse in Susanville burned to the ground. The blaze was lit when exhaust from a motor which was pumping cement into the warehouse, came in contact with gasoline. The damage was estimated at $42,000.

Susanville attorney Donald Pardee Cady spoke at Lassen College’s 1967 commencement ceremonies. Cady, a longtime county resident who graduated from Lassen College in 1932, spoke to 75 graduating students about the importance of a junior college education.

Members of the Animal Liberation Front released nearly 300 wild horses from the Bureau of Land Management holding corrals in Litchfiled. The group claims responsibility for other such releases throughout the country.

More than 120 years after a mysterious double murder in the northwestern Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, a memorial service is being planned for one of the victims, a prospecting partner of Lassen County’s namesake, Peter Lassen.

Remains believed to be those of Edward Clapper, who was murdered with Lassen, will be reburied Saturday, May 30 at the Peter Lassen Memorial site on Wingfield Road.

The city of Susanville is being pushed hard by federal and state agencies that want final plans for the Piute Creek flood control projects soon.

If they don’t get them, the city could lose a $3 million flood control grant. But as far as the city officials are concerned, that may not be all that bad.

With this grant, Susanville will have to provide a $75,000 funding match for Upper Piute Creek improvement project.

A group of private investors wants to put a coal-gasification plant, to produce fuel and electricity, on 500 acres at the Sierra Army Depot airfield.

The synthetic gas produced by the superheated coal can be refined into methanol, pipeline natural gas or ultra-clean diesel fuel.

The coal is then water cooled, producing steam to run turbines and generate electricity.

The 570 Contingency Response Group, stationed out of Travis Air Force Base, recently made use of Sierra Army Depot’s Amedee Army Airfield for a field training exercise.

Exercise Lighting Fury began on Monday, May 15, lasting a week and a half with 133 men and women participating.

A grease fire at Young Sing Chinese restaurant marks the third time this year a Main Street restaurant kitchen has caught fire.

It was roughly 7:30 a.m. when Primo Deli owner, Tammi Montgomery, walked out of Susanville Supermarket and saw smoke rising from the Young Sing Chinese restaurant.

Montgomery immediately ran back into the supermarket and told store manager Todd Eid, who had one of his employees immediately call 911. Eid then went across the street to the restaurant and was able to shut off the power and propane to the restaurant.
