90 years ago

Arthur Fordham, of Susanville, marched the city streets holding a six-foot long American flag. His march took place during the morning hours for six consecutive days and was to increase awareness of Memorial Day. Some residents joined him in the march and sang patriotic songs as they walked.

 

Remember When for May 14, 2013

90 years ago

The local chapter of the American Red Cross began selling miniature American flags to county residents in an effort to raise money to provide medical care for war victims.

 

Remember When for May 7, 2013

90 years ago

A big crowd assembled in Westwood for a flag-raising ceremony to kick off month-long festivities for Memorial Day. Many townspeople participated in a parade, led by the Westwood bank, and listened to the town choir. The wife of Fletcher Walker raised a new 25-foot long flag at the end of the ceremony.

 

Remember When for April 30, 2013

90 years ago

A bill asking for a state appropriation of $60,000 to extend the Susanville-Red Bluff Highway — Highway 395 — to the Nevada state line passed both branches of the California legislature.

The bill was reportedly passed on the merits of providing a road of military importance.
