It was announced that Susanville would be one of the stops on a proposed extension of the Great Northern Railroad. The new route would connect Butte, Mont. through Boise, Idaho to San Francisco. It was reported many residents had long awaited the decision and coupled with the government’s proposed enlargement of the post office, businesses were anticipating an increase in revenue.

 

Remember When for July 24, 2012

115 years ago

An armed force of nearly 40 men hung stage robbers John and Charlie Ruggles. John said he would tell where the two buried stolen treasure if the men released his brother. The men refused and pulled the foot stands out from under the robbers. The two were hung with such force that their necks were broken several minutes later.

 

Remember When for July 17, 2012

115 years ago

Claude Withers was accidentally killed at his ranch near Janesville. A stray bullet from his son’s shotgun, while he was shooting a target, struck Withers in the chest. It took nearly five hours for his son to get him to a doctor and by that time, Withers had died from severe blood loss.

 

Remember When for July 10, 2012

115 years ago

A relic of the Sagebrush Wars was found on a resident’s property near Main Street.

The article was a piece of a cannon used in the battle.

It was believed it belonged to the men of Plumas County who came through the Susan River Valley to try and persuade the Honey Lakers they were within the jurisdiction of California.
