A barn belonging to E. Laner at Adin was burned some two weeks ago. A cow and a fine merino buck valued at $300 were also burned. The loss was about $1,800. It is thought to be the work of an incendiary and a man has been arrested on suspicion.

The California State Fish and Game Commission announced that $1,000 had been appropriated to eliminate carp from Lake Almanor. The “bony, hungry, non-game fish” were monopolizing streams feeding into the lake, as well as the lake itself, to the disadvantage of the game fish. The announcement was made at the Lassen Fish and Game Conservation League’s annual Clear Creek picnic.

A federal grant of $334,000 from the U.S. Department of Human Services was awarded to the Northern California Emergency Medical Care Council to help finance a sophisticated advanced life support system in the nine northern counties (Lassen and Plumas included) served by the council.

An insect flying into the face of 17-year-old driver Jennifer Allyson Lodge resulted in her swerving and losing control of her car while driving on U.S. Highway 395 near the Honey Lake Rest Stop. After Janesville firefighters pried open the back of the vehicle, she and passenger John Meyer, 18, of Susanville, were taken by ambulance to Lassen Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Leavitt Lake residents Linda and Doug Ohotto were driving by the Sands Casino in Reno when bright objects in the sky caught their attention. They thought they were UFOs, but it was just birds eating bugs in the lights.

While looking at the birds, they ran a red light and were pulled over. As they tried to explain to a Reno police officer about the birds, Linda spotted their neighbors’ Datsun GT stolen two weeks earlier. The police officer checked out the story and let the Ohotto’s go without a ticket for locating the stolen car.

A wildland fire at the entrance to the Bizz Johnson Trail last week provided more evidence that anything can start a fire this year.
The 1/3-acre blaze broke out just after 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14. According to Captain Pinky Shores of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, investigators theorized that flames erupted after something hit a hot piece of metal and blew into the brush on the north hillside right at the entrance to the trail.

The Lassen County Board of Supervisors did not approve and adopt the Westwood redevelopment report, a preliminary step toward approving the project that would direct property tax dollars to help revitalize the 893-acre project area.

The project area includes the vacant Red River Lumber Company Mill site and everything from First Street to Highway 36 and Ash Street to Greenwood Street.

Those who profit from medical marijuana cultivation and distribution should not expect a friendly welcome in Lassen County.
Lassen County’s Board of Supervisors held a public hearing, received a staff report and unanimously approved extending the moratoria prohibiting medical marijuana cultivation and dispensaries in the unincorporated areas of Lassen County for another 10 months and 15 days on Tuesday, June 15.

The board originally approved the 45-day moratoria following a study session held at Jensen Hall on Tuesday, May 11. The board also discussed the issue at its meetings on Tuesday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 27.

The public hearing was required to extend the moratoria, and the board could extend the moratoria for another year as long as the total length of time does not exceed two years.
