The action came two days after California Gov. Pete Wilson personally appealed to President George Bush to relax federal standards to allow quick removal of dead and dying timber on California’s national forests.

A young man from Sacramento was airlifted to a hospital after spending a night in the La Porte Road area when his all-terrain vehicle went over a ravine.
The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office received a call Sunday afternoon, Aug. 8, reporting a 16-year-old male went missing during an ATV ride with family and friends.
A press release said the boy’s family told deputies he was following them from Lee Summit to a friend’s cabin off of La Porte Road when they were separated.
The family called the sheriff’s office after searching for around 90 minutes.
The sheriff’s office, Plumas National Forest and Plumas County Search and Rescue responded to the scene, assisted by a CHP helicopter, until nightfall.
The ground search continued until 10:30 p.m. without finding any trace of the missing juvenile.
California Fish and Game joined the other agencies the next morning and the search resumed.
A friend of the young man’s family reported finding him in a ravine below Fells Flat Road with unknown injuries.
The release said, “The victim was hauled up to the road with a rope rescue system and turned over to PDH ambulance personnel.”
