Dennis Booth went home to be with the Lord May 27, 2012, after a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 29, 1920, to Ora and Bessie Cottle in Peach Orchard, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Earl Clark, four brothers, one sister and two grandsons.

She moved to Susanville in 1950 when her then husband, Clifford Booth, was employed by Paul Bunyan Lumber Company.

Dennis was employed for 18 years at J.C. Penny and retired as manager of the shoe department in 1984. She also held many part-time jobs over the years, including waitressing at the Grand Café.

She came to know the Lord late in life and was baptized in Eagle Lake at age 79 along with her best friend Dora Hartman, son Rodger and daughter-in-law Verna.

Dennis had a special way with children, and was affectionately called Grandma D. She served in the nursery at Evangelical Free Community Church for many years. She had the gift of hospitality and will be remembered as an amazing cook, preparing meals for all she welcomed in her home.

Dennis maintained her independence well into her 80s.Her activities included splitting wood with a maul and caring for her yard. She enjoyed lifting weights, aerobics, water aerobics and she walked several days a week.She was a fierce competitor in card games with friends and family.She loved, and was loved by many people. Dennis was a shining example and inspiration to all who knew her, truly epitomizing the Proverbs 31 woman.

She leaves behind one sister, Maxine Triplett, in Arkansas; her five children, Donna (George) Sargent, Phillip Clark, Rodger (Verna) Clark, Sandra (David) Hey and Pamela (Steve ) Trettin. She has 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held July 21, at the Eagle Lake home of George and Donna Sargent.

Glenn A. Laver

Glenn A. Laver passed away May 17, 2012 at Country Villa Riverview. He was born Dec. 7, 1924 in Alturas, Calif. Glenn resided in Alturas until 1945 when he moved to the Honey Lake Valley where he met and married Ora Lee Grant in June 1946. They moved to Oregon-Washington doing ranch work until her father became ill about a year later. Then they returned to Standish and remained there until May 2010.

Glenn started out doing ranch work, moved on to work at the box factory for Fruit Growers Supply Co. at night and tended bar during the day. After about a year, he started with the Lassen County Department in Standish, from which he retired in 1980 to return to ranch work for R.C. Roberts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Anna Laver; brothers, Joe, Lloyd, John, Don, Bud, Cecil and Al; sisters, Barbara, Flossie (Jimmy) and Anna Marie; and his wife of 48 years, Ora Lee.

He is survived by his daughter, Tish; son-in-law, Jon; and son, Dennis, all of Susanville; four grandchildren, Joanna McElrath, Jim Beckett (Desiree), Rod Laver and Bobbi Moore (Jimmy); eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. June 9, 2012 at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary with a Celebration of Life potluck at Susanville Senior Center, 1700 Sunkist Dr.

Orpha Peterson

1924-2011

Orpha Maud Peterson, 87, passed away Oct. 24, 2011, at Banner Lassen Medical Center, in Susanville, Calif. Her cause of death was SEPSIS with acute cholecystitis. During the final year of her life, she was compassionately cared for at Country Villa Riverview Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Orpha was born July 16, 1924, in Tipler, Wis., to Orin and Maud Snow. She married Lester James “Pete” Peterson in 1944, prior to his shipping out to Europe during World War II. She resided in Winona, Minn., and Bismarck, N.D., before the family relocated to Eureka in 1954.Orpha worked 25 years at Bank of America in Eureka, retiring in 1986. Upon retirement and the death of her husband, Orpha moved to St. Helena, where she enjoyed living in the beautiful Napa Valley.

A member of The United Methodist Church of St. Helena, she is survived by her children, Nancy Barrow, of Novato, John Peterson, of Sonoma, and Mike Peterson, of Cloverdale. Orpha leaves two grandchildren, Chad and Derek Peterson.

She is preceded in death by her generous, dear sister, Lois Picard of Eureka.

Orpha is inured next to Pete at the Napa Valley Memorial Park. Orpha was an excellent cook and will be remembered for the gourmet meals and her ability to meet new people and to make instant friends.

Donna Mary Grace Young

Donna passed away from this life on May 15, 2012 with family by her side. She was born on March 3, 1933 in San Francisco, Calif.

Donna went to St. Monica’s Parochial School and then on to Presentation High School, San Francisco. Donna went on to complete her schooling at city college for a bachelor’s degree in bookkeeping. At that time she became the bookkeeper for California Poultry Company of San Francisco.

In 1958 Donna married Alfred V. Young, then moved to Sonoma, Calif. in 1963. At that time she became a volunteer Pink Lady at Sonoma Valley Hospital from 1985 through 1996.

Donna and her husband, Alfred, sponsored a ladies over 30 soccer team in Hawaii for collegiate competitions for well more than 10 years. Donna enjoyed 49er football and all sports and news programs on T.V.

In 2007, Donna and her daughter, Mary, moved to Susanville, Calif. to be closer to family.

Donna loved to travel to Hawaii and the Bay Area for extensive stays.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Mary Young; cousins, Candy and Al Fizer, Steve Hartman, Brandon Knox, Robin Smith and Dorene Gardner, all of Susanville; and many friends from Susanville to San Francisco to Hawaii.

At 6 p.m. June 8, 2012 there will be a Rosary for Donna at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary. At 11 a.m. June 9, 2012 there will be a Mass held for Donna at Sacred-Heart Catholic Church with a small luncheon held at Monsignor Moran Hall at noon.

Any donations maybe made in Donna Young’s name at Sacred-Heart Church, Susanville.
