Dale R. Pierce

Dale R. Pierce was born July 10, 1927, in Turlock, Calif., the son of Robert and Lillie Pierce.

On April 11, 2012 he passed from this world joining his lifetime love, Edna Onstine Pierce and son Richard.

Daleleft school in the eighth grade to help support his family.

He drove a truck delivering produce to canneries in the San Joaquin Valley. At 17 he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Okinawa as a Motor Machinist Mate.

He was a respected auto mechanic.

He often told the story of taking a jeep that had been nearly completely destroyed and he brought it back to life using parts from other destroyed vehicles.

It then became the main mode of transportation for many of his fellow sailors going on liberty.

This came to end when one of the officers discovered it and requisitioned it for himself.

After moving to the Susanville area in 1961, Dale workedas a mechanic first with Doyle Motors and later for Coin Lumber Company until he became disabled by rheumatoid arthritis.

Dale was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing and had a special fondness for the Warner Mountains in Modoc County.

At the age of 72, Dale obtaineda high school equivalency of which he was extremely proud.

He was always fooling with gadgets trying to build a better mousetrap, his latest being an oxygen generator to boost the miles per gallon on his 1974 Chevy pickup which he had previouslyconverted to propane.

He stayed intellectually curious taking computer classes, becoming quite proficient on his home computer. He loved to grow things and took great pride in his garden.

Dale is survived by sons, Larry and Michael; daughter, Susan; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12 at the Diamond Crest Cemetery in Johnstonville. A luncheon and celebration of Dale’s life will follow at the home of Marilyn Getty.
