Caltrans annual litter day

April 22, 2013 — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 2 will join 11 other Caltrans districts as they take part in the nationwide “Great American Cleanup” beautification campaign Thursday, April 25.

Last fiscal year, Caltrans spent more than $52 million on cleanup and trash removal along our highways. During its one-day litter event in 2012, Caltrans workers collected more than 160,000 cubic yards of trash. That’s equivalent to 10,000 garbage trucks, which end-to-end would stretch 51 miles.

In District 2, maintenance crews, along with Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, collected more than 34,000 (33-gallon) bags last year in Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity counties at a cost of approximately $330,000.

April 22, 2013 — It’s probably safe to say there is no one whose life has not been touched by cancer. It could be a sister, parent, friend or co-worker who has it. It could be us. It’s particularly heartbreaking when the victim is a child.

April 18, 2013 — Lassen County's Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution supporting the Second Amendment and the people's right to keep and bear arms at its Tuesday, April 9 meeting, but the original wording of the resolution drew some sharp criticism from a Westwood couple.

Eileen Spencer presented a letter to the board questioning the resolution's language that the board “cannot abide by any order, provision law or agency initiative that violates the protections of the Second Amendment.”

April 17, 2013 — A well-known proverb says we learn who our friends really are when hard times hit. And when the ones who count rally around you, support you and encourage you through those difficulties, you know you are truly blessed. That’s something Jerome Thomas has learned during the past year at Lassen College.
