Tuesday, May 20, 2014 — Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of the summer season with the year’s first three-day weekend.
While the Memorial Day holiday provides a wonderful opportunity for family get-togethers and family fun as well as an extra day off work, it also provides an opportunity for each of us to remember and reflect upon the real reason for the holiday — a time to pause and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and our freedom.
The heroes we honor this Memorial Day are our brothers and sisters, our mothers and our fathers, our nieces and nephews and cousins. They are the brave men and women who from the beginning of our nation have answered their country’s call to arms and made the ultimate sacrifice. We owe them our respect and recognition. There is no way to know what kind of world we might inhabit if it weren’t for their commitment to our country and its people. It’s not hyperbole to say they died defending everything our country stands for so we might enjoy those freedoms today.
