Exploring historic buildings is my new passion

Tuesday, May 27, 2014 — There is something striking and mesmerizing about walking into a building harboring a century of memories.

Earlier this month, sports editor Maddie and I embarked on a mini adventure, touring a piece of Lassen County neither of us had visited. We were able to visit the historic Winje’s Emporium and Hotel in Doyle.

As I walked down the hallway of the recently renovated and redecorated rooms on the second floor of the historical Doyle monument, I found myself wishing I could have experienced the building in its prime when it was the only lodging and gas station between Susanville and Reno.

Aid and Attendance benefit available

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 — Aid and Attendance is a special monthly pension benefit available to wartime veterans and surviving spouses of deceased wartime veterans who have in-home care or who live in nursing homes or assisted-living facilities. The basic criteria for the Aid and Attendance benefit include the inability to feed oneself, to dress and undress without assistance or to take care of one’s own bodily needs.

People who are bedridden or need help to adjust special prosthetic or orthopedic devices may also be eligible, as well as those who have a physical or mental injury or illness that requires regular assistance to protect them from hazards or dangers in their daily environment.

We should keep partisan politics out of local elections

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 — Oh, I guess as the June 3 primary gets closer our particular brand of Lassen County curiousness just grows larger and larger with each passing day.

Nosing around on the Internet, I visited a website critical of District 1 Assemblyman Brian Dahle for endorsing incumbent Julie Bustamante for the county clerk’s position in the upcoming election.

The website goes on to suggest Dahle, a Republican, should have supported David Cole, another Republican, for that office simply because — get this — he is a fellow Republican.

Memorial Day honors our fallen heroes

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 — Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of the summer season with the year’s first three-day weekend.

While the Memorial Day holiday provides a wonderful opportunity for family get-togethers and family fun as well as an extra day off work, it also provides an opportunity for each of us to remember and reflect upon the real reason for the holiday — a time to pause and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and our freedom.

When information is needed we tend to ‘Google it’

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 — What do you do if you have a problem to solve? Most, as I do, “Google it.” Consistently answers to questions; directions to destinations; tips on places to vacation; best methods to accomplish a task; or instructions for making something can be found on the Internet through a search engine.

While Google isn’t the only search engine — other familiar names include Bing, Yahoo, Ask and WebCrawler —the company name “Google” managed to become synonymous with the act of doing a computer search for information.
