June 12, 2013 — Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. recently issued the following statement regarding the death of United States Forest Service Firefighter Luke Sheehy:

“Anne and I were saddened to learn of the death of firefighter Luke Sheehy, a young man who devoted his life to protecting his fellow Californians. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”

Sheehy, 28, of Susanville, was fatally injured by a section of a falling tree at the scene of a lightning-sparked wildland fire in the Modoc National Forest — 15 miles southeast of the community of Alturas.

Playing bluegrass music is a family affair for the Andersons who are among the 13 featured performers at the Susanville Bluegrass Festival scheduled for Thursday, June 20 through Sunday, June 23.

June 12, 2013 — Set in the beautiful landscape of the Lassen County Fairgrounds, the upcoming Susanville Bluegrass Festival provides a unique, summer event for locals and music enthusiasts alike.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire that appeared to have started on residential property at the intersection of Lakecrest Drive and County Road A-3 this afternoon, Tuesday, June 11. Neighbor Bill Dustin went to the property when the fire broke out and said he saw a van and a car on fire. The blaze then spread into the vegetation and appeared to have been stopped at the edge of Connex box. Prior to the firefighters arrival on scene, Dustin and another neighbor shoveled dirt onto the fire, while another assisted the efforts with a tractor. Photo by Ruth Ellis 

A Susanville man died Monday, June 10 as a result of injuries sustained on a wildfire on the Modoc National Forest, according to a press release from the United States Forest Service.

Luke Sheehy, 28, a member of the California Smokejumpers, based out of Redding, was struck by a falling portion of a tree on the Saddle Back Fire in the South Warner Wilderness about 15 miles southeast of Alturas, Calif.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. according to the press release.
