Jail demolished

Oldjail

A demolition crew from Walberg Demolition, of Corning, Calif. demolishes the old jail located on the corner of Court and South Roop streets.

Lassen County Public Works Director Larry Millar said the space will be used for parking at this time.

However, one idea is to create a courthouse square as the historic courthouse, jail and annex facilities are also in the vicinity.

However, Millar said the Lassen County Board of Supervisors has not given any direction.

He said two to three studies have been done over the years to see what can be done with the space.Photo by Ruth Ellis

I like how it says "create a courthouse square as the historic courthouse, jail and annex facilities are also in the vicinity."

How sad. :(

It was the "new" old jail, not the one that sits next to the old courthouse facing Lassen street. It was behind the courthouse. Hopefully folks weren't attached to that one but you are right the real old one really has character

What? No local General Engineering company around Susanville that could have handled this. So, no local bidders in return brings no local jobs and revenue to this desert in the high. That's sad; but then, it's the economy I have heard.

Charles Moffett! You hit us with a strong question to ponder on. Why did they hire a outside contractor?

They didn't hire a local because their price was too high as usual. I had this outfit do work for me and he was cheaper by over 10% on a $50K job, than the 4 locals i got quotes from. Hard to believe he can make any money underpricing the locals; or maybe the locals are overpriced...Say it ain't so!

Most of the commenters on this site are so very negative about every topic and always assume the worst. People like you are why we lack community pride. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all. The sky is not falling. Be nice, be civil, or please move to New Jersey.
