July 28 — Mud flew, metal crunched and madness ensued as 10 drivers went head-to-head (and bumper-to-bumper) during the Lassen County Fair’s 2014 Demolition Derby.

The derby took place immediately after the stock car races at Diamond Mountain Speedway on Sunday, July 20 and saw a packed crowd of spectators who were eager to witness mass destruction.

Buddy Davies, who drove car No. 10x, came out as the champion of the evening. Keith Peterson, in car No. 77, took second place and Nevin Kennemore was awarded Most Aggressive in car No. AR-15. Both Davies and Peterson are from Bieber. Kennemore is a Susanville native.

At first it was unclear who the winner would be, as Peterson’s car was still running, but got stuck in the mud, tires spinning. Davies gave him a few more hits, but then got stuck in the dirt right next to him. With both cars still running, but neither able to free themselves, the judges declared an end to the derby and named Davies the winner since his was the last car moving.

When asked if he knew right away he had won, Davies said he wasn’t sure. Peterson, however, said knew Davies was taking home first place.

“I was stuck, so I knew he had it,” he said after the derby.
