Depot responds to alleged theft of military items

April 23, 2013 — The command and employees at Sierra Army Depot have responded to the arrest earlier this month of an employee who allegedly stole military equipment shipped from the war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan for inventory and storage at the base near Herlong.

According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento April 5, depot employee Devon Gregory Biggs, 36, was arrested April 3 with a number of military items he allegedly was trying to steal from the depot’s Warehouse 301. The items, valued at $84,884.26, included “technologically advanced thermal imagers, lasers, scopes and a modified M16A1 fully automatic rifle with an adjustable stock and converted to accept a sound suppressor,” the complaint alleges.

Caltrans annual litter day

April 22, 2013 — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 2 will join 11 other Caltrans districts as they take part in the nationwide “Great American Cleanup” beautification campaign Thursday, April 25.

Last fiscal year, Caltrans spent more than $52 million on cleanup and trash removal along our highways. During its one-day litter event in 2012, Caltrans workers collected more than 160,000 cubic yards of trash. That’s equivalent to 10,000 garbage trucks, which end-to-end would stretch 51 miles.

In District 2, maintenance crews, along with Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, collected more than 34,000 (33-gallon) bags last year in Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity counties at a cost of approximately $330,000.
