Rotary announces music contest

Sunday, March 22, 2015 — Local high school musicians have an opportunity to compete in the rotary District 5190 Youth Instrumental Music Contest and a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize.

The club level contest will be held April 9 at Eagle Lake Village and first-place finisher will win $100, the second-place finisher will win $75 and the third-place finisher will win $50.

An area contest will be held April 23 at Eagle Lake Village and the first-place finisher will win $150, the second-place finisher will win $100 and the third-place finisher will win $75.

Shaffer library receives book donation

Saturday, March 21, 2015 — A donation of books to the Shaffer Elementary School Library has been made through the Will James Society Book Gifting Program. It is the mission of the Will James Society to provide books written and illustrated by James in the western genre for readers of all ages to enjoy stories of the real cowboy life. The society donates books to schools and libraries throughout the United States and Canada.

Sanitary board decides against solar

Saturday, March 21, 2015 — The Susanville Sanitary District Board has decided to hold off on exploring solar energy options.

During the Tuesday, March 10 meeting, general manager Randy O’Hern presented some solar proposal options.

According to O’Hern, they were looking into solar options to try and offset the large electric cost to run the plant.

Discover the Modoc Line Rail Trail

Students will have the opportunity to hike, observe wildlife and provide trail maintenance in Snowstorm Canyon.

Friday, March 20, 2015 — Students in Lassen County from seventh to 12th grade are invited to participate in the Modoc Line Rail Trail Service Project from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21. The project, hosted by the Lassen County Environmental Education Collaborative, will be led by Amy Holmen, land manager for Lassen Land and Trails Trust. Activities will include hiking, wildlife observation and providing trail maintenance in Snowstorm Canyon. Youth will also have opportunities to learn about the historical aspects of the Modoc Line (including a view of the 1968 train wreck) and the columnar basalt cliffs that rise above the trail.

High school district issues layoff notices

Friday, March 20, 2015 — Every year, schools in California must examine and determine if layoffs are needed prior to March 15, or all teaching staff may retain their jobs despite a district’s budget.

Nine layoff notices will be sent to teachers in the Lassen Union High School District.

Layoffs may be for a complete elimination of services, such as the three full-time teachers, or a reduction of services in instances where there are not enough students to fill one class.

According to McCabe, Lassen layoffs amount to approximately $472,000.
