County abolishes authority

Feb. 26, 2013 — Lassen County’s Local Reuse Authority (LRA), an agency created by the Lassen County Board of Supervisors to manage the properties acquired from the U.S. Army and spur economic development in the Herlong area, is no more.

On Sept. 11, 2012, the board moved to abolish the agency and transfer the associated properties to the county.

The board unanimously approved a motion to disband the agency it created in 1995 — finalizing the action it took last year.

 

Officials investigate inmate death

Monday, Feb. 25 — Law enforcement officials are investigating the Sunday, Feb. 24 death of an inmate as a homicide, according to a press release from High Desert State Prison (HDSP).

An unidentified 26-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell about 7:05 Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead at 8 a.m.

HDSP is withholding the inmate’s identity pending the notification of the next of kin. The inmate arrived at HDSP April 10, 2012 after being convicted in Yolo County of sodomy with a child under the age of 14. He was serving a 22-year sentence.

This badge was determined to have been used by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office between 1900 and 1935. A similar badge will be created for deputies to wear in 2014 when the sheriff’s office celebrates its 150th year.Sheriffxa

Feb. 23, 2013 — The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office has several projects in the works to help preserve and honor its history.

  

Plans for centennial events on track for this summer

Feb. 22, 2013 — The Westwood Centennial Committee, under the umbrella of the Westwood Chamber of Commerce, has organized several events for the summer of 2013 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the town of Westwood. Subcommittees were formed to oversee certain projects and set dates.

A special exhibit of Westwood artifacts from the Turtle Bay Museum in Redding will be on loan for viewing at the Lassen County Visitor Center, Westwood Station. The exhibit will be open each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Feb. 21, 2013 — A house is not necessarily a home, but a house can hold memories and the Victorian residence on Cottage and Gay streets seems to play a part in linking Susanville’s past to its present.
