Diamond Mountain group plans field day

Saturday, April 18, 2015 — The regular Diamond Mountain meetings held just before the Lassen County Fire Safe Council meetings on the first Monday of the month are progressing well.

“We’re very happy with the support… of the community and the partnering agencies,” said managing director Tom Esgate, noting how pleased the council was with how many people were attending the 5 p.m. gatherings.

Now, after several monthly meetings, the key members of the Diamond Mountain initiative group are planning on taking a field tour in May.

Old Town Mercantile becomes new artisan’s co-op

Friday, April 17, 2015 — Westwood and the surrounding area may not have major manufacturers but there are a multitude of cottage industries. To help the artists and crafts people who create quality, unique items market their product, Marty and Diane Growdon have taken the lead on a co-op called the Old Town Mercantile at 319 Birch St. in Westwood.

“There are a lot of talented people in our community who aren’t well known. We are trying to provide a place, a way to display and sell their work,” explained Marty Growdon.

Fire Safe Council does not receive grant

Friday, April 17, 2015 — The Lassen County Fire Safe Council submitted three applications for the Cal Fire State Responsibility Area grants, but none were selected.

“Lassen County struck out, we didn’t get a single project there,” said Tom Esgate, council managing director and project manager at the Monday, April 6 Lassen Fire Safe Council meeting.

According to Dave Junette, operations chief for the Lassen, Modoc and Plumas, Modoc received about $53,000 for a project, and Plumas County received $301,000 for a grant.

Arts Council seeks donations


To raise funds for the new roof project, the Lassen County Arts Council set up an account at gofundme.com/roof4lac where people can go and make donations.

Free disposal day at landfill continues

Thursday, April 16, 2015 — The free disposal program at Bass Hill Landfill will remain in place, a decision recently made by the Lassen Regional Solid Waste Management Authority.

The matter was addressed during a Tuesday, March 24 meeting after authority staff received an opinion from counsel Jim Curtis the free disposal program was not consistent with the intent of Proposition 26 and the California Constitution.

Authority staff presented several options for the board to consider — keep the program, phase it out or end it immediately.
