Conserve water during drought

Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 — While the drought is not as noticeable locally, organizations are preparing to conserve water in various ways.

According to Lassen County Public Works Director Larry Millar, Lassen County has not seen many examples of the drought that is threatening California, but the State Water Board still issued a press release urging residents to limit the amount of water used outdoors.

According to the press release, an emergency regulation urging others to increase water conservation practices went into effect Tuesday, July 29.

Candidate filing closes Friday, Aug. 8 for the statewide general election

Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 — Those interested in running for office in the Nov. 4 statewide general election have until the close of business Friday, Aug. 8 to file all necessary paperwork. Candidates have until 5 p.m. to complete their candidate filing with the Lassen County Clerk’s Elections Division at the Historic Courthouse, 220 S. Lassen St., Susanville. The deadline applies to local jurisdictions that intend to place a measure on the November ballot.

The law provides candidates with a 26-day window in which to file necessary paperwork. To date, numerous candidates have filed to run for local offices in the 15 school districts, and 20 special districts holding a November election in Lassen County. Lassen County dismissed as defendant in Grace Foundation case

Monday, Aug. 4 — A $20 million lawsuit against Lassen County has been dismissed.

County Administrative Officer Richard Egan said an Orange County Superior Court judge made the decision today, Monday, Aug. 4. The lawsuit has been dismissed with prejudice meaning Beth DeCaprio, executive director of The Grace Foundation, will not be able to re-file the case.

All other defendants including Wells Fargo, Bank of America and the banks’ former attorney Tim Ryan were also dismissed.

Brown declares state of emergency for Northern California wildfires

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today, Monday, Aug. 4, issued an emergency proclamation for the state of California due to the effects of wildfires in Lassen, El Dorado, Amador, Butte, Humboldt, Madera, Mariposa, Mendocino, Modoc, Shasta and Siskiyou counties that have burned thousands of acres, destroyed homes and other structures and damaged critical infrastructure.
