Alleged sleepy driver hits tree

Monday, July 27, 2015 — A man hit a tree after apparently falling asleep behind the wheel.
    At about 4:30 p.m. Monday, July 13, Dylan Harris, 21, of Red Bluff, California, fell asleep driving his 2001 pickup on County Road A-1, north of State Route 36.
    Harris was driving at an unknown speed, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, when he allegedly fell asleep as he entered into a curve. He then traveled off the right shoulder and hit a tree.

Cartel suspected in Plumas pot garden bust

Monday, July 27, 2015 — A raid about 15 minutes east of Quincy recovered 11,800 marijuana plants with some up to 4 feet tall, according to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.
    Several law enforcement agencies were called in for the July 8 bust that also uncovered massive amounts of trash, fertilizer, chemicals and pesticides in the area. Officials said no suspects were encountered, but the grow site was characteristic of those set up by large drug trafficking organizations operated by Mexican drug cartels.

School board to decide whether to continue bus service

Sunday,  July 26, 2015 — At their next meeting, the board of trustees for the Westwood Unified School District will vote on whether to continue bus transportation. Crystal Johnson, board president, said the board was planning to discontinue the service depending on information received before the Aug. 19 meeting.
    If the service is needed, parents and guardians should contact the district office or attend the August meeting.
    At the Wednesday, July 15 meeting, the board voted to adopt a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt math program. Marci Johnson, principal of Westwood High/ Fletcher Walker Elementary, said the program had opportunities for students to be tutored online from their home if stumped by homework.

Former Susanville songwriter wins Country Showdown

Sunday, July 26, 2015 — Attendees at the annual Double X Country Showdown on Thursday, July 16 at the Lassen County Fair were entertained by the musical performances of seven contestants.
    Winning this year’s competition with two rousing numbers, Robert James Clark and Anthony Vairetta, wowed the judges and the crowd alike with Clark’s original songs — “Troublesome” and “Leaves on a Tree.”  “Troublesome” also earned the duo
$250 for best original song.
    Clark and Vairetta secured $1,000 with their win, and they are off to the next portion of the competition — the California state contest; time, date and location to be announced.

Susanville Sanitary Board of Directors adopts budget

Sunday, July 26, 2015 — The Susanville Sanitary Board of Directors approved the 2015/2016 fiscal year budget.
    During the Tuesday, July 14 meeting, the directors unanimously approved the budget following a public hearing.
    The budget was discussed during a June meeting.
    During the former meeting, general manager Randy O’Hern presented the draft to the board and set a public hearing.
    O’Hern said the preliminary budget was formed through a collaboration with him and the finance committee.
