Firefighters respond to South Gay Street fire

Wednesday, April 2 — About 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, emergency officials responded to a structure fire on South Gay Street. According to Susanville Fire Department Battalion Chief James Moore, the resident of the house was unconscious and taken to Banner Lassen Medical Center and the resident’s dog was safely removed from the house. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and Moore said it was mainly on the second story of the building. Photo by Makenzie Davis

District attorney hired as county counsel

Tuesday, April 1 — Lassen County District Attorney Bob Burns will be assuming a new role as county counsel.

After the Lassen County Board of Supervisors interviewed two candidates in closed session on Tuesday, April 1, county executive officer Richard Egan reported the board unanimously directed him to negotiate an employment contract with Burns and bring it back as soon as possible.

Burns, who announced he would not be running for district attorney earlier this year, will fill the position that is being vacated by Rhetta VanderPloeg, whose last day is May 16.

Four people originally applied for the job, however, two candidates backed out. 

Guitarist wins Rotary Music Contest

Tuesday, April 1, 2014 — A 12-string guitarist from Lassen High School took first place at the local Rotary Music Contest held Thursday, March 27, picked up a $100 prize and advanced to the area contest to be held April 17 at Eagle Lake Village.

Supes appoint treasurer

Tuesday, April 1, 2014 — The appointment of Lassen County Treasurer/Tax collector went to an individual who has served as associate treasurer/tax collector and third in command since 2006.

Norma Scheetz will serve in what is traditionally an elected position until the term ends the first Monday after Jan. 1, 2015. She has worked in the office since 2000 starting as an administrative assistant before promoting up to the associate position.

Scheetz said she appreciates the opportunity the supervisors have given her.

Sheriff to fill new captain position

Tuesday, April 1, 2014 —Interested candidates will be testing for the new captain position at the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office with an appointment possibly being made later this month.

At the beginning of the 2012-2013 fiscal year, four of the then six sergeants at the sheriff’s office participated in an interim assignment as an acting captain allowing them to be exposed to the duties that will be expected. It also allowed the sheriff Dean Growdon to observe their ability and potential for growth.
