Spring is in the air, track season gets underway
Lassen High School hosted its first Westside League track meet against Gridley, emerging victorious in all four divisions. In the varsity boys competition, Lassen cruised to a 76-39 win. T.J. Cowan won three events - 110 high hurdles, long jump and 300-meter intermediate hurdles. He was the sole runner in the 300 meters and just had to beat Gridley's Justin Wering in the 110.
In the long jump, Cowan soared to a distance of 19-8 1/2 for the win. Lassen's Scott Gill took third.
Taylor Polan won the 100 meters (11.5) and 200 meters (24.16) easily.
Matthew Johnson was first in the 400 meters, and Nathaniel Weaver beat teammate Travis Miller to take the 800 meters.
Gill edged Mike Duffy to win the 1,600 meters.
Brian Morrish was a double winner to help the junior varsity boys to a 83-40 victory. He won the 110 intermediate hurdles and 300 low hurdles.
Brian Duffy topped the field in the 400 meters; Seth Anderson was first in the 1,600 meters; Juan Castro ran away with a 800-meters victory, and Christopher Fisher crossed the finish line first in the 200 meters.
Robert Clark took first in the shot put (42-6) and discus (112-4). Nathanael Mihoch took third in the shout put (37-2) and discus (100-3).
Lassen's varsity girls buried Gridley 94-27.
Distance runner Heidi Ard had wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, beating her own teammates. Tanneria Johnson won the 300-meter hurdles and high jump.
Other winners included Siobhann Baker (discus), Alicia Baughman (800 meters), Roni DeMasi (shot put), Rebekah Retterath (400 meters), Jackie Green (long jump) and Quinn McKee (100 high hurdles).
Elizabeth Trisler took second in the 1,600 and 800 meters.
In the JV girls competition, the Grizzlies rolled to a 53-18 win behind three multiple winners.
Rochelle Coyle took first in the discus (39-0), long jump (10-9 1/2) and 400 meters (1:18).
Megan DuVarney won the 200 meters (32.88) and 100 meters (15.46), and Riki Lowe topped the field in the 300-meter low hurdles (54.68) and 100 low hurdles (18.34).
The Grizzlies compete next in a league meet in Oroville Wednesday, April 10.
Lassen then heads to the Reed Invitational Friday, April 12-13 in Sparks, Nev.
