Cougar women swinging well, but still struggling
Lassen College's softball team played its best softball of the season, despite not winning a game at Sierra College Wolverine Classic Saturday-Sunday, April 6-7 in Rocklin. In pool play on Saturday, Lassen faced off against San Jose City, San Joaquin Delta and Diablo valley.
In the 8-7 loss to San Jose City, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead and scored five more runs in the second inning. But San Jose answered with a six-run second to tie the score used two errors to push across the game-winning run in the third inning.
Lassen out-hit San Jose City 8-6, but committed four errors and yielded five walks.
Lassen's leading hitters were Kelly Schlauch (2-for-3), Kristy Stevens (2-for-2, one RBI), Sonia Herrera (2-for-3, three RBI) and Candace Draper (1-for-3, three RBI).
The Cougars built an0other early lead against San Joaquin Delta, leading 3-2 after the first inning. Delta packed on two runs in the second and third innings to win 7-4.
Tricia Hudgins, Schlauch, Draper and Herrera collected a hit and a RBI. Stevens tripled and drove in a run.
Diablo Valley defeated Lassen 6-1. Hudgins, Stevens, Draper, Herrera and Jen Montes de Oca had hits.
In single-elimination play on Sunday, Lassen fell to Butte 8-5. The Cougars piled up 10 hits and committed just one error. Leading hitters were Schlauch (2-for-4) and Stevens (2-for-4).
