Speedway racing gets underway
After a month delay, racing at the newly-named Lassen Speedway got underway last Saturday. In conjunction with the Lassen County Children's Fair, two races were held - a 50-lap modified race and 30-lap stock car race.
Veteran driver John Sloan (No. 97) grabbed the lead on the 41st lap and took the checkered flag. Jeff Chew (8) held the lead for 15 laps and took second. He was followed by Charlie Schuck Jr. (16), Scott Foreman (4) and Will Zinn (17).
Last year champion Jay Evans (8) picked up where he left off, winning the stock car race. He was trailed by Brian Wood of Quincy (3A), Steve Behr (57), Russell Jeskey (00) and Erica Harmon of Chester (69).
First-year promoter Chuck MacKay said he was pleased with the first event. "There was a good turnout, well over 500 people," he said.
"I expect more drivers to turn out in future races."
Racing starts on Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. Women's admission will be $5.
