Grizzlies just miss track title
Equipped with just five athletes, Lassen High School's varsity boys track and field team just missed winning last week's Northern Section AA Championships by 12 points. "We were close and did real well with that many athletes," Lassen coach Vern Watson said. "The guys really surprised me. If I would have shuffled the lineup a little bit and had some guys compete in other events, we could have won.""
Corning, with 10 athletes, won the meet.
Lassen's T.J. Cowan won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.35, and teammate Mike Duffy was first in the 800 meters at 2:05 and 1,600 meters at 4:46.
Lassen's 4x400-meter and 4x100-meter relay teams were winners. Andrew Thomas, Chris Fisher, Taylor Polan and Cowan make up the 4x100-meter relay team.
Fisher took second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.99, edging out Polan (11.0).
The junior varsity boys took second behind Corning.
Lassen winners included Brian Morrish in the 110 high hurdles (15.74), Seth Anderson in the 1,600 meters (4:57) and Nathanel Mihoch in the discus (115-8).
Morrish was second in the low hurdles and Anderson was the runner-up in the 3,200 meters.
Robert Clark hurled the shot put just less than 45 feet to place second.
Heidi Ard was Lassen's sole winner in the varsity girls competition. She topped the field in the 1,600 meters at 5:50.
Rebekah Retterath took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:34.3.
The 4x400-meter relay team took second.
Just four varsity girls entered the meet for Lassen, which finished fifth behind Las Plumas, Corning, Willows and Oroville respectively.
The Grizzlies head to the Northern Section Championships Friday, May 24 at West Valley High School in Cottonwood.
The team's top-two finishers in each event at the AA championships will compete.
"Our relay teams have a good chance at winning at the sections, especially the 4x400-meter team," Watson said.
