School uniforms discussion set for tonight's meeting
Superintendent Dan Lewis said, “There are certain rules and regulations we have to follow in terms of adopting uniforms.”
The committee will get public, parent and student input and make a recommendation to the board.
Lewis said the committee will probably be made up of seven to nine individuals with possible representatives from the Parent Teacher Association, student leaders and people from the business community.
“It will be one of those well rounded committees, as usual,” Lewis said.
The topic of uniforms came about during a board meeting on Tuesday, July 11 when the board reviewed the dress code implemented in 2001.
Vice President Ken Theobald said he didn’t think the dress code was being enforced.
Theobald said when he goes to lunch around the high school when school is in session, he sees students wearing baggy pants and girls walking around with bare midriffs.
“I’m embarrassed by some of the girls that I see out there,” he said.
“I got a solution to the problem,” said board member Mark Nareau. “Throw out the dress code and go to uniforms.”
Nareau said he’s tired of hearing, “I saw someone’s belly button ring,” or “His pants are sagging to much.”
“Let the teacher’s teach. They don’t need to be the fashion police or the safety control. Let them teach, let’s go to uniforms.”
