DA drops attempted murder, assault charges against Barber
The two men were sought in connection with an assault at Riverside Park on July 29.
Barber pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, not a firearm, on Aug. 31. A preliminary hearing, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7 was continued to Sept. 13.
According to the court documents, the “People are not ready to proceed. People move to dismiss (the case due to a) lack of evidence at this time. People inform defendant and counsel they may file at a later date. Defendant is discharged.”
A clerk at the courthouse said a complaint and an amended complaint had been filed against Bliss, but all charges against him had been dismissed as well. The clerk said there was no file in the case.
According to Susanville Police Detective Rodd Joseph, Remey arrest warrants were issued for the two men about 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17. Bail for both men was set at $750,000 each.
Joseph said information on the pair was featured on the Susanville’s Most Wanted list included on the city of Susanville’s Web site on the evening of Aug. 17 or the morning of Aug. 18.
Bliss voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement officers on Wednesday, Aug. 23, and Barber voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement officers on Sunday, Aug. 27.
An article published in the Tuesday, Aug. 29 issue of the Lassen County Times reported that Barber was still at large. The newspaper prepared the Tuesday, Aug. 29 issue for publication on Friday, Aug. 25, and the newspaper was printed on Monday, Aug. 28. The information regarding Barber’s surrender to authorities was not available at press time.
While the information published in the article was correct as of Friday, Aug. 25, the Times regrets that Barber was characterized as a fugitive on Aug. 29 when in fact he had already voluntarily surrendered to authorities and been in custody for three days when the newspaper was distributed.
