North Lassen Street goes one way
On Aug. 3, 2005, then Mayor Rod DeBoer directed former Police Chief Chris Gallagher to move ahead with plans to turn the portion of North Lassen Street in front of city hall and the U. S. Post Office to Main Street into a one-way. Fourteen months later, it appears the work will be done.
The city plans to close the section of road from 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15. The street will be re-stripped and signage will be put in place.
Historic Uptown Susanville Association President Don MacVitie is a strong supporter of the change because the Uptown area will gain 20 more parking, an ongoing concern for many HUSA members. The total cost to do the project with the city’s Public Works Department is $6,450, which HUSA paid.
MacVitie said the city is doing the work at cost. At one time HUSA hoped to have volunteers do the work but that became cost prohibitive when adding the cost of insurance and workers compensation to the estimate.
Gallagher, also a big advocate of the change, said in 2005 he has noticed near miss collisions on North Lassen Street almost daily. He said the angled parking with two-way traffic makes it very difficult for drivers to back out without interfering with traffic in both directions.
“With the larger vehicles that we have in Susanville, it further complicates the issues,” Gallagher said at the Aug. 3, 2005 meeting.
MacVitie said phase two of the project would be to turn South Lassen into a one-way street and phase three would be to beautify the streets. He said one idea is to add bricked crosswalks.
