Seventeen tons of waste cleaned up in Herlong
West Patton Village Community Services District manager Vivian Peterson helped recruit and coordinate the volunteers participating in the cleanup.
Peterson said she was very pleased by the number of volunteers who turned up on a warm day to help cleanup the illegal dumpsites.
“I just hope people stop dumping their trash so we don’t have to do this every year,” she said.
According to Valentino, more than 17 tons of waste was picked up by the volunteers and placed in three dumpsters provided by Lassen Waste Systems. All the waste was hauled to Bass Hill Landfill for proper disposal. Additional materials, including 20 cubic yards of scrap metal, three refrigerators, 53 tires, eight batteries and 15 abandoned vehicles were collected from surrounding desert areas and unloaded at the transfer station for recycling. After the cleanup, all of the volunteers were treated to a box lunch and given commemorative T-shirts.
Other businesses and individuals sponsoring the cleanup event include Arnold Bay of A.B. Construction, the Fed Up Bar and Grill, supervisor Jack Hanson, the Herlong Market and the Mark.
The event was sponsored through a grant provided by the California Department of Conservation and administered by the Lassen Regional Solid Waste Management Authority.
