Old Westwood Hospital back on the market
In September 2002 Zimmerman and his partners announced plans to renovate the 17,000 sq. foot structure and open the Blue Ox Steakhouse and Robbers Creek Lodge. Their blueprint for the property was to make one wing a restaurant with an alcove that had a billiard table and library for hotel guests and restaurant patrons and the second wing a business center. The old hospital rooms on the second and third floors would be guest suites.
In the fall of 2002 the owners worked on the building to protect it from further weather damage. The work included a new roof and an exterior coat of paint. Also the windows were boarded up.
At that time Zimmerman said the structure was virgin cedar and in good shape. He estimated the worth of the rough-cut timber at over a million dollars.
According to the Real Estate fact sheet on the property the asking price is $800,000, which includes the building and two vacant lots. Suggested uses for the structure include a dormitory style assistance home, an elderly live–in home or a lodge.
The Westwood Hospital was built in 1917 by the Walker Family to provide medical services to the families that lived in Westwood and worked at the Red River Lumber Company. It had about 100 beds. The hospital closed in the early 1950s but was used as a medical facility until around 1957.
