Rapist receives sentence
Charges he forcibly raped the girl, forcibly penetrated her and forced her to have oral copulation were dismissed as part of a plea bargain.
Lassen County District Attorney Robert Burns and defense counsel Mark Nareau stipulated the prison sentence.
According to the court file, the court also accepted the stipulated sentence but reserved the dismissal of the remaining counts for sentencing.
The victim’s mother and grandmother presented victim’s impact statements during the sentencing.
The mother said the incident had been “a nightmare to our family” since the rape of her daughter. And she said Cox had violated the trust the family placed in him as a friend and later as an employer. She encouraged Cox to get help while he was in prison.
The grandmother told Cox, “What you did will live on forever” and there will “never be enough time to punish you” for raping her granddaughter.
Susanville attorney Bob Hill, appearing for Nareau, told the court Cox was “very remorseful” for his conduct.
He noted Cox had pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, not forcible rape.
“The defendant stands ready to pay his debt to society,” Hill said.
Susanville police arrested Cox on a felony charge of suspicion of forcible rape after police responded to Banner Lassen Medical Center at 3:10 a.m. Dec. 19, and the 16-year-old girl reported she had been sexually assaulted at a south Susanville residence.
