A lightning storm that came through California on Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22 caused hundreds of fires across the state, blowing smoke into Lassen County, causing evacuations and road closures in various areas. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has reported from its Web site that firefighting resources have almost tripled since the initial response at the beginning of the week, when more than 4,000 firefighters were spread extremely thin to deal with the fires.

As of Monday, June 30, almost 20,000 firefighting personnel from state, local and federal agencies have been committed to the fires, along with 1,424 engines, 369 bulldozers, 494 hand crews, 418 water tenders, 926 helicopters and six air-tankers.

So far, almost 1,500 fires have started since the June 20 lightning storm.

The fires have burned more than 364,600 acres across the state as of the evening of Sunday, June 29.

Fires have destroyed 28 residences, one commercial building and 19 outbuildings. Thousands of other structures, have been threatened.

The following are just some of the fires in Lassen County and surrounding counties, as of the evening of Sunday, June 29.

Cub Complex
Consisting of the Cub Fire and the Onion Fire, The Cub Fire Complex, roughly 16 miles southwest of Chester near Deer Creek Canyon, is now a combined 3,500 acres in size.

The Cub Fire is still 0 percent contained, while the Onion Fire is about 25 percent contained.

Campgrounds along Highway 32 have been evacuated because of the fires, including the Potato Patch, Alder and Elam campgrounds.

Mill Complex
The Mill Complex is comprised of the Mill Fire and the Antelope Fire.

The Mill Fire is located 10 miles east of Red Bluff, and is burning in the Ishi Wilderness area of the Lassen National Forest, east of Red Bluff. So far the fire has burned about 11,360 acres, and full containment is expected by Tuesday, July 1.

The Antelope Fire is located about seven miles east of Red Bluff, close to the Mill Fire. It has burnned about 3,000 acres, and full containment is expected by Tuesday, July 1.

Peterson Complex
The Popcorn Fire and the Peterson Fire have combined, and CAL FIRE is now referring to them as the Peterson Complex.

The complex is located about six miles southwest of Fall River Mills. It is about 90 percent contained by fire lines and has burned about 7,824 acres so. Crews are currently focusing their efforts on mopping up hot spots within the complex.

The Peterson Fire is located about 12 miles east of the community of Cassel, it has burned about 1,200 acres and is currently 5 percent contained.

Officers from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department have lifted the precautionary evacuation order for the community of Little Valley.

Corral Fire
The Corral Fire is burning about 12 miles northwest of Eagle Lake’s north shore, near Gooch Valley. It has burned about 10,000 acres, and is 5 percent contained.

Canyon Complex
The Canyon Fire Complex consists of about 50 smaller fires combined for a total of 9,000 acres in and around the Feather River Canyon. The complex is 5 percent contained.
