Wilma A. Crutcher
Wilma passed away peacefully at her home in Herlong, Calif., on April 9, 2010. She was born Oct. 27, 1927, to William and Susie Abraham in Kooskia, Idaho. She was raised at Stewart Indian School Stewart, Nev., where her father was a boys advisor and boxing coach and her mother was a teacher.
She married her soul mate of 62 years, Ned Crutcher, March 12, 1944 in Carson City, Nev., continued to live at Stewart Indian School while she worked with the Internal Revenue Service in Carson City, Nev., and Ned worked with the children at the school. Wilma and family moved to Herlong, Calif., in 1940, starting her 37-year career as a civil service employee with Sierra Army Depot in Herlong.
Her career at Sierra Army Depot was very dynamic having held many positions, working her way up to the management field within the depot budget office and then the department of personnel. Wilma retired in 1984 as the depot’s equal employment opportunity officer. Throughout her career she received numerous commendations and awards; however, she felt the most rewarding part of her career was the assistance and services she provided to the employees and the depot as the EEO officer.
Wilma was a very active member of the Herlong community as her family was growing. She was instrumental in establishing the Sierra Central Credit Union and was a member/officer of the Sierra Women’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Civilian Welfare Council and school and youth activities.
She was a proud member of the Order of Eastern Star 5 Star Chapter 51. She was a 58-year member, being initiated on Feb. 6, 1952. She was Worthy Matron twice. She also was a Rainbow Girl since her teenage years and was Mother Advisor for many years.
Wilma is survived by three sons Lawrence (Hank), of Herlong, Calif., William (Mister) and Janet, of Sutcliff, Nev., and J. Robert (Bob) and Donna from Wadsworth, Nev.; two sisters Susan Maness and Nance Benson, both of Reno, Nev.; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ned Crutcher; son Edward Crutcher; daughter Daphne Spataro; grandson Rodney Houston and great-grandson Justin Houston.
A viewing was held April 15 at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary, in Susanville, Ca. Services were held April 16 at the Susanville Indian Rancheria gym, with a reception immediately following at the Rancheria Resource Center. Wilma requested in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Shirner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.
Wilma was a very humble person, giving credit to others for work she did. Her reward was to see the success of others she was helping or guiding whether it is through a career or personal challenge. But her family was her life and that included the extended family of many who spent hours, days, months and in some cases years in her home and they were always loved and cared for as one of her own.
Wilma spent countless hours after her full-time job sewing formals and dresses for the girls, making clothes for her kids, attending all youth and sport functions, chaperoning dances, and we can’t forget about making those football uniforms white again before every game. With her family she so enjoyed the get-togethers at holidays or for any spur-of-the-moment occasions.
The picnics and camping trips were special; watching the little ones scurrying around, talking and laughing with everyone and just enjoying the day, and always bringing extra food to make sure there would be enough (to feed and army)! She made the best strawberry jam, which was always in high demand by all the kids. She was our pillar, confidant, mentor, conscience and so much more. She was a quiet, very classy lady but when she spoke you listened. In a sense she was our gentle giant in a small body, but her presence was oh so powerful. She was the best, and we will truly miss our gentle giant. She will always be in our heart.
