A live blackbird with clipped wings was placed on the floor before Harry Cain’s young wild cat the other day, and the little savage killed the bird and ripped it open in about 10 seconds.  

A fine lot of trout from the headwaters of the Dutch Hill ditch came into town Tuesday and sold like hotcakes at six pounds for a dollar.

Within 10 minutes of the four long blasts of the city’s fire alarm, 135 people assembled and registered in answer to the call for emergency mobilization. During the first hour a total of 171 registered.

Lassen High’s graduating class of 1965 was expected to receive a record of 177 diplomas during exercises at the Pacific Street Auditorium.

25 years ago   

The Lassen County Board of Supervisors was expected to join forces with Sierra Pacific Industries and Southern Core Company of Susanville in an attempt to fight the abandonment by southern Pacific Transportation Company of the railroad between Wendell and Susanville.   

The supervisors were directed by county counsel to prepare comments to proper agencies to keep the railroad intact.   

Sierra Pacific Industries indicated it would attempt to purchase the local line if protests.

Attorneys for the defendants in a federal lawsuit alleging a former Lassen County prosecutor’s hips were broken during a police raid have asked the court to delay the civil rights case until the criminal proceedings are completed.

Though the city of has enough money to pay its bills, cash is very tight and the city has no reserves left, according to Finance Director Robert Porfiri.   

To make cash available when needed, the city council gave City Administrator Newell Sorensen the authority last week to apply for up to a $1 million line of credit from Bank of America.  

“Historically the city has done a great job managing its finances,” Porfiri told the council at its Wednesday, May 19 meeting. “As costs of living and other things increase, the city has managed to continue operating the city without increasing revenues. That’s remarkable.”

If you are a parent of a Lassen High School student, you most likely received a call last week from a school official, stating to not panic over rumors of a local case of bacterial meningitis, a rare but serious infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain.    

The calls incited panic in many local parents who where not even aware of any talk of a potential case of bacterial meningitis, which is more serious than viral meningitis and can be life-threatening if not treated right away.    

“The rumors are just that —rumors. There are no cases of bacterial meningitis in Lassen County,” said Lassen High School principal and superintendent of Lassen Union High School District Rebecca Cartwright.
