Jan. 4, 2011 — It might be hard for some voters to believe, but today is Election Day. The race for the California 1st Senate District seat, formerly held by Dave Cox, who died unexpectedly July 13, will be decided today in a Special General Election held across Northeastern California.
California Assemblyman Ted Gaines, a Republican, squares off against Rancho Cordova Mayor Ken Cooley, a Democrat, in the special election.
Gaines defeated both Barbara Alby and Roger Niello in the Republican Party Primary Election for the seat held Tuesday, Nov. 2 while Cooley ran unopposed in the Democrat Party Primary. The special election became necessary because none of the candidates garnered more than 50 percent of the vote.
Although Lassen County Clerk Julie Bustamante asked the Lassen County Board of Supervisors to authorize a vote-by-mail election as a cost-saving measure, the board felt some voters might feel disenfranchised, and they directed the clerk to follow regular voting procedures as she would for any other election.
Those who normally vote-by-mail need to return their ballots to the county clerk’s office at the Lassen County Courthouse or to any polling place by 8 p.m. tonight. Those who normally cast their vote at a precinct polling place will find them open as usual.
Despite the fact Lassen County could spend as much as $200,000 to hold this special election, Bustamante predicts a light voter turnout — especially if the weather is bad. That’s a shame.
We encourage all registered voters in the county to take the time to cast a vote in this special election. Ultimately, it’s the people’s participation in our republic that makes it all work.
At the end of day, one of these two candidates will represent the people of Lassen County and much of northeastern part of the state — from the Oregon border to the Mojave Desert, across much of the Sierras and the Mother Lode to even parts of some urban areas near Sacramento — in the California Senate. Will it be the right candidate? That’s up to you. We urge you to take the time to participate in our democracy. Cast your vote.
