Gerald Dean Adams was born May 31, 1936 and passed away April 6, 2011 in Susanville, Calif.
He was one of eight children born to Harrison and Marie Adams, in Knobel, Ark.
He leaves behind his wife Vikki; children Michael, Julie and John; stepson Ernie Stumpf; and grandchildren Vanessa and Jesse.
He is survived by brothers John, Jack and Larry; sisters Bonnie Lyon and Ruth Adams; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Doyle and Jim Adams.
His military service included three years in the Air Force. He also served four years in the Army as a cryptographist working in secret encoding.
He changed careers and became an LVN and worked for many years in private duty, hospitals and finally, the High Desert State Prison, located outside of Susanville. After retiring, he and his wife Vikki opened a board and care home in Susanville.
Viewing hours were held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 15 at the Fairhaven Park and Mortuary, 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, Calif.
Glenn L. Anderson
Glenn L. Trowbridge Anderson passed away at the VA Hospital in Reno, Nev., Wednesday, April 13 at the age of 83. Anderson was born Jan. 21, 1928 to Pansy (Hagel) and Warren Trowbridge in Oregon. After his mother Pansy died giving birth to a daughter when he was about 5-years-old, Glenn was adopted by his aunt Violet M. “Peggy” (Hagel) and Charles “Ira” Anderson and went to live on the Anderson Ranch on the Madeline Plains in Northeastern California. There he grew up, learning a variety of useful skills from Ira, his grandfather August Anderson, and uncles including Elmer Anderson who married Peggy’s younger sister, Sarah Ethel (Hagel) Anderson.
Glenn told many stories about growing up on the Madeline Plains, and playing with his cousins Marguerite “Posie” (Anderson) Edwards and Iris (Anderson) Davie.
Glenn served in the Korean War. After the war, he returned to Susanville. He helped his mother operate Rocky Crest Mobile Home Park and also worked for Deal & Davie, Inc. among other jobs.
He was a devout Christian and loved to play the bass fiddle and piano. In later years, he drove the Senior Citizens “meals on wheels” van. Glenn shared a home with extended family A.R. and Chris Danes and their children, Adam and Autumn.
Survivors include his cousin, Nicky DeVose, Bruce Davie, Doug Davie and Sally Edwards.
Memorial services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30 at the Southern Baptist Church on the corner of Alexander Avenue and Cornell Street. Internment will be in the Lassen Cemetery on Chestnut Street.
Jean Baxter Bengtson
Jean passed away comfortably on Saturday, April 9, 2011, surrounded by her family. Jean was born Jan. 18, 1922 in Sacramento, Calif. She was the youngest daughter of Elmer Baxter and Mabel Herbeck Baxter, of Baxter, Calif.
Jean attended Towle Elementary School and graduated from Placer High School in 1938, at the age of 16. She went on to graduate from U.C. Berkley in 1942 majoring in political science. Following graduation she married the love of her life, a young Army Air Corp pilot, Nathan “Bing” Bengtson. They were married for 68 years, until his passing in 2010. Jean taught kindergarten at the Lincoln Way Elementary School for many years, until their move to Susanville, Calif., where she taught for 15 years. After retirement she spent several years on the Lassen County Fair Board and was very active in the local Historical Society, and Friends of the Library.
In 2000, she and Bing moved back to Auburn where she continued with her interest in the Placer Historical Society and Auburn Friends of the Library. She particularly enjoyed monthly luncheons at Lou La Bonte’s Restaurant with her retired teacher friends.
She is survived by her sons Jon (Sandy), of Reno, Nev. and Perry (Peggy), of Auburn; daughter-in-law Patti Bengtson (Bruce), of Reno; granddaughters, Lenora Tale (Frank), of Wheatland, Kimberly Garman (Kurt), of Reno, Sherrie Freed (Bret), of Foresthill and Andrea Johnston (Ryan), of Reno; grandson Todd Bengtson (Beth), of Bend, Ore.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was a talented, creative and beautiful lady, who will be missed by all.
A celebration of life will be held at Lou La Bonte’s Restaurant, 13460 Lincoln Way, Auburn, at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011. Interment will be at the Old Auburn Cemetery.
Victoria Marie Savage
Susanville native Vickie Savage passed away at her sister’s home in Susanville on April 18 at the age of 72. Vickie was born in Susanville on Dec. 2, 1938. She was the first child of Norberto and Gregoria Cordoba.
Vickie spent much of her childhood on the Satica Ranch which was operated by her uncles. The Satica Ranch would always hold a fond place in her heart. She graduated from Lassen High School in 1956. After high school she got a job with the California Highway Patrol as a secretary. In 1962 Vickie met Norman Savage and the two were married in Reno in 1963. After their marriage they moved to Idaho where their two sons were born. Frank was born in 1964 followed by Albert in 1965. In 1966 Norm and Vickie moved back to Susanville to be closer to family. Vickie then worked for the California Correctional Center in procurement for several years before getting a job with the California Division of Highways as a secretary. In 1982 the Caltrans office in Susanville was closed and Vickie returned to the California Correctional Center to work until her retirement in 1988. In retirement she enjoyed visiting with her family and friends. Vickie’s grandchildren were an important part of her life and she moved to Alturas in 2004 to be closer to them. She spent a lot of time taking care of and enjoying her grandchildren in her final years.
Vickie was preceded in death by her husband Norman in 1988.
She is survived by her son Frank Savage and girlfriend Tawny, of Loma Rica, Calif.; son Albert Savage and wife Nicole, of Alturas, Calif.; grandchildren Kaleb and Donovan Savage, of Alturas; brother Norbert Cordoba and wife Pam, of Susanville; sister Norma Garate and husband Johnny, of Susanville; sister-in-law Dolly Pratt, of Alturas; sister-in-law Joyce Perkins and husband Frank, of Albany, Okla.; sister-in-law Sharon Vadnais and husband Charles, of Hamer, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be held at Walton’s Mortuary at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27. Funeral mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 28. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Vickie Savage’s memory.
Randy Allan Schier
Randy Allan Schier died on March 12, 2011 at his home in Susanville, Calif. He was born on Sept. 25, 1955 to Louis and Blanche Schier in Chicago, Ill.
Randy was preceded in death by his father; mother; sister Sandy Schier; and nephew.
He is survived by his three sons Joey, Jesse and Jay and their wives; five grandchildren, all of Westwood; brother Louis, of Sacramento; sister Kim, of Grass Valley; companion Karen Wheeler, of Susanville; previous wife Louise; and numerous nieces and one nephew.
Memorial services and celebration of life were held in Westwood on March 27, 2011.
