Harold Lester Abbott
Long time Susanville resident Harold Lester Abbott passed away Monday, May 23, 2011 at the age of 92. He was born on Dec. 24, 1918 in Thrall, Calif. to Frank and Fay Abbott. He and his family moved to Susanville in 1926 where he has resided except for his tour of duty in World War II and his university years.

While visiting home on furlough from the United States Army, he met his future wife Roma whom he married in 1946. They shared 60 years of marriage before her death in 2006.

He was a graduate of the Susanville Elementary School, Lassen Union High School and Lassen Junior College. He completed his university studies at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for almost four years, most of that time was spent in foreign service.

Upon his return to Susanville, he became assistant manager of the local employment service office during the year 1946 and in December of that year he was appointed Lassen County Veterans Service Officer and held that position until September 1950 when he resigned to enroll in Loyola University Law School in Los Angeles. He graduated from law school in June 1953 with a juris doctor’s decree (doctor of law). He was admitted to practice law in January 1954 and returned to Susanville where he became deputy district attorney. He served as the Lassen County District Attorney for four terms. In 2004 he was honored for being a practicing attorney for 50 years.

He was also city attorney of the city of Susanville from 1961 to 1967. He was a past commander of the Thomas Tucker Post 204 of the American Legion and was a past commander of William Davidson Post 2381 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. He was also a past district commander of the Third District of the American Legion.

He is survived by his son John (Debbie); and his daughter Jane Gardner (Jim); grandchildren Amy Gardner VonSchimmelmann, Brian Gardner, Matt Gardner, Josh Abbott and Erin Abbott Messer;  and great-grandchildren Ryan Gardner, Noah VonSchimmelmann, Kate VonSchimmelmann, Conner Garner, Hunter Abbot, Avalon Messer and Aurora Messer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leonard and Virgil; wife Roma; and great-grandson Christian VonSchimmelmann.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. May 31, 2011 at the Janesville Cemetery, Janesville, Calif.

Dorothy Ineze Hardman
Dorothy Ineze Hardman, 83, of Fruitland, Idaho, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, in Ontario, Ore.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Highway Worship Center in Fruitland, Idaho. Private family cremation was held under the direction of the Haren-Wood Funeral Chapels, Ontario Payette.

Dorothy was born July 12, 1927, in Santa Cruz to Guy Seymour Curtis and Gwendolyn Irene Ruddock. She attended schools and graduated in Santa Cruz. Later she worked for the military hospital and met Virgil Hardman, fell in love and later married in 1945. To this marriage they were blessed with three children.

Virgil and Dorothy both attended Bethany Bible College, where Virgil became an ordained minister. During his ministry in Santa Cruz, Virgil worked in his father-in-law’s trailer park in the maintenance department. Later they moved to Susanville and, in 1993, moved to Fruitland, Idaho.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil in 2008; one brother and one sister.

She is survived by one son, one niece, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Denny Jellison
Denny Jellison of Fort Worth, Texas died peacefully May 17, 2011. Denny was born in Susanville on Now. 9, 1930 and graduated from Lassen High School in 1948. As an officer in the United States Air Force, Denny was an F-84 pilot and flight instructor during the Korean war. After his Air Force service, Denny obtained a degree in geology from Texas Tech in Texas and found a career as an engineer at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, retiring in 1991.

Denny is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie; sons Randy and Bradley; daughter Renee and his twin brother Gene Jellison, of Cupertino, Calif., plus a host of grandchildren and friends.

We will remember Denny for his great sense of humor, his story telling and terrific mastery of telling jokes. We will miss him.
All is well Denny, safely rest, God is nigh.

Kenneth Melton Hunter
Kenneth Melton Hunter passed away after a long illness on Friday, May 20, with family at his side. Kenneth Hunter, born Nov. 5, 1932 in Porum, Muskogee County, Okla. Ken leaves his wife of 55 years, Maralyn, their four children, Robert and wife Rhonda; son Ken; daughter Cheryl and husband Kenneth Holmes; and daughter Becky and husband Dirk Huddle.

Ken was the loving grandfather to Kenneth and Lindsey Holmes; Rachelle and Ryan Esway; Kevin Hunter; Katie Edwards; Chelsea and Jared Huddle along with three great-grandchildren; Caleb Hubbard, Taylor Edwards and Aubrey Esway.

Ken loved his family, his friends, his neighbors and our country. He retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service that provided endless adventures of travel and memories for the entire family.

Ken continued to work in Sacramento in the automotive industry and ARA Enterprises.

Kenneth was a devoted member of the Citrus Heights Community Church for more than 35 years, an active member of the Sunrise Lyons Club and the Sacramento Model T Club.

Those who knew Kenneth will recall his love for tinkering on cars, clocks and spending time fishing with his family and friends. Ken will be remembered for his never-ending calm words of insight, bright eyes and beautiful smile. He was the first to lend a hand to help wherever needed, no matter the task.

A Celebration of Life to honor Kenneth Hunter will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Bayside Church of West Roseville, 10020 Foothills Boulevard, Roseville.

Donations in Ken’s memory may be made to the Citrus Heights Community Church general fund.

Roy Gilbert Brent
Lifelong Westwood resident Roy Gilbert Brent, Jr., 78, died at Country Villa-Riverview located in Susanville, Calif. Tuesday, May 24, 2011.

Roy is survived by his wife Loretta Brent, of Westwood; daughters Janet Butts, of Garden Valley, Calif. and Jeani Brent, of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters Marge Kirby, of Wenden, Ariz. and Eve DeVier, of Janesville, Calif.; and the grandparent to one grandson and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his sister Betty Abrams, brother Robert Brent and a grandson.
A celebration of Roy’s life to include military honors will take place at the graveside in the Westwood Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011 with a potluck reception to follow at the family residence.

Chivon Nelson, 22, died of injuries sustained in a home fire on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

A viewing is scheduled at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 and a candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27.

Services will be at 11 a.m. at Susanville Assembly of God with a funeral procession to Janesville Cemetary.
A reception will be from 2 – 5 p.m. at Diamond Mountain Casino. Please bring a dish to share.
